Where’s Luke?

It’s been a rough year for the mayoral office of Pittsburgh. After the FBI investigation of former Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper over misallocation of funds caused him to resign, the Bureau went after Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s administration. Ravenstahl didn’t seek a re-election bid for this year’s mayoral race and all but disappeared. The way Ravenstahl is handling his final months is shameful. Trying to stay out of the spotlight doesn’t mean he should ignore his job completely. Hardly anybody has seen him since he denied re-election. There is even a hashtag trending for him on Twitter: #WheresLuke. It’s embarrassing, not only for him but for the whole city. It’s unfair to the residents of Pittsburgh who elected him into office. He owes it to them to do his job and finish out his term.If anything, it makes him look even guiltier, since the FBI investigation of his administration is still underway. It also means Pittsburgh doesn’t have a proper leader for almost half a year.If that wasn’t bad enough, the Republican mayoral candidate Josh Wander is not even here to campaign. In fact, he’s not even in the U.S. He’s in Israel with his family while his staff manages his campaign in the city he supposedly wants to lead.We don’t need another absent mayor. Wander should be working for his election, not leaving all the labor for his staff. He should be in Pittsburgh debating with democratic mayoral candidate Bill Peduto and standing for what he believes is best for this city. There is a lack in central leadership in Pittsburgh. Ravenstahl is still the mayor until the election, but it feels as if there’s no mayor at all. Pittsburgh needs a leader with a plan to help rebuild its image after Ravenstahl’s debacles.Peduto helped get the city out of $90 million of debt and into a $50 million surplus. For years he worked to get community-based reform and improve the East End.This city knows how to bounce back. Although Ravenstahl’s term is marred by scandals, Peduto looks like he has what it takes to gain back the support of Pittsburghers.
