The Student Government Association (SGA) swore in 15 new Senators during Monday’s legislature meeting.

Monday, Sept. 20 was SGA’s third meeting of the Fall 2021 semester. Many students gathered into Lawrence Hall 200 to attend the meeting, and some were there specifically to be sworn in.

President Dennis McDermott addressed the room, saying that this has been their favorite organization that they’ve been a part of at Point Park.

“This has made such a huge impact on my life,” McDermott said. “It helped me realize my ambitions at Point Park. It’s just something that has made me realize that this is the thing I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Vice President Kendra Summers took everyone’s names, along with their pronouns, and described the upcoming training retreat that SGA will be taking.

The cabinet was introduced, and each of the five committees (Rules, Finance, Communications, Student Innovation and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and their duties were explained to the new Senators.

During the Reports of Standing Committees, Treasurer Maggy Hier announced that 10 more clubs than last year requested money from the finance committee, calling it a great improvement. SGA passed the motion to allocate the money that was approved for these clubs.

Next, the 15 new Senators present were sworn in and are now officially a part of the organization.

During the announcements segment of the meeting, the Executive Cabinet made sure to emphasize the importance of mental health and not burning yourself out.

“Don’t overextend yourself,” Chief of Staff Sophie Burkholder said. “Please give yourself grace.”

Multiple members of the cabinet explained that they want SGA to be a safe space to talk about mental health, and that Senators will not be punished for going through things in their personal lives.

The meeting wrapped up with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair Eli Bagaporo wishing everyone a happy Hispanic Heritage Month and talking about events coming up, including a cabaret.

The next SGA meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 27 in the JVH Auditorium.
