Globe’s Point: University needs to announce a plan as Federal Work Study runs out

Happy week ten, Pioneers! Just a little over a month left until the end of the semester! Times can be very stressful as you fill out internship applications for the summer, scholarship applications and job searching for graduates. Take care of yourself mentally during this time and all the time. You truly are doing great!

It has been a little just over a month since the university announced that the Federal Work Study program would be coming to an end between March 19 and April 1. The university has not made any additional announcements since then. Nothing has been said as to how offices with work study students are going to be open and maintain their services after the program comes to an end. Nothing has been said as to how the university is going to support the over 150 students in the program for the remainder of the semester.

This is not okay. The issue does not go away by not acknowledging it. Just because it is getting towards the end of the semester does not mean these students do not need help. A month is still a quarter of the semester. We should not be okay with the university not addressing such a serious issue. Staying quiet enforces this behavior. We need to hold the university accountable so this does not happen again, and we deserve a university that can step up to the plate and take care of its students in times of need.

Since the university did not say so, we encourage you to make use of the Pioneer Pantry. While it may not be able to supply all of your needs, hopefully it can ease some of the stress during this time. Fill a to-go container at the dining hall. Look for events on campus that are giving out free food. Take advantage of local restaurants that offer student discounts.

It is going to be okay, Pioneers. We will get through this together.
