It is hard to believe the end of the semester is already here, Pioneers. There are a million things that we could say here about that, but it is better to offer one, strong, consistent, message: you’ve got this.
You may be concerned like several of us on the editorial board that you will not be able to finish the semester or get all your assignments finished on time. We urge you to take a deep breath right now. We are not kidding. Breathe in, and then breathe out. There is a very good chance that you are making the amount of work that you have left to do this semester seem larger than it truly is by worrying about it instead of getting your assignments done. It is hard to not stress and worry, but panicking will truly not make you get anywhere.
If you’ve missed assignments and want to make up points, talk to your professor. While some may be strict about deadlines, some others may be understanding. At the same time, do not drop 10 papers on your professors the day before your final. But we, likewise, encourage university faculty to be understanding of the issues that students face and to support students in need.
A college semester is a marathon, not a sprint. If you have fallen behind a great deal, next semester is a great chance to start fresh and reconsider your learning habits. Throughout your college experience, you are going to have to learn how to learn in a way that works for you. Avoid burnout wherever you can, and remember to take time for yourself throughout the semester before it gets too late. Take advantage of the university’s mental and physical health resources. We are the ones paying for it at the end of the day.
Regardless, the semester will end whether you want it to or not. If it takes buckling down and doing nothing but schoolwork for a few weeks, then so be it. Either way, stop and acknowledge all of your hard work. Allow yourself to be proud of your accomplishments. You deserve it.
After you complete your finals, enjoy the holidays. We can assure that you’ve earned this break. Take some time for yourself, to be with family and friends and come back recharged and re-energized for the spring semester. You got this, Pioneers!
