Pioneers ace first series

The week started with fun but then at the Fairmont State University Tournament, the Point Park University volleyball team got down to business winning all four of its games and becoming co-champions. “I think our ability to spread the ball effectively continues to improve over last weekend,” head coach Mike Bruno said in an interview Sunday. “Nicole [Wurstle] is doing a great job on the right side. Livia [Caluori] in the middle and Lindsey [Oberacker is] as solid as ever. Chelsea Katkich is putting up great numbers as well.”The Fairmont State Tournament provided the Pioneers another weekend’s worth of games to play and allowed for more chances for the team to grow.“It’s really important for us to make a statement early in the season,” setter Tayler Pugliese said in a phone interview Saturday. “We’re receiving votes for national rankings so every game counts.”Libero Alyssa Hall agreed, knowing the team is off to a great start but that the team will need to maintain and even improve their play.“I was happy with how we played but I am excited to keep getting better,” Hall said in a phone interview Sunday. The weekend started with a three set to one victory over Seton Hill University. In the match Oberacker had 12 kills and both Caluori and Katkich had 10. Hall totaled 23 digs in the match, while Pugliese had 37 assists.“The win against Seton Hill definitely started us off to a good tournament,” Pugliese said. “They are always pretty good so we knew we would have to play hard. Playing hard and together and winning the first game carried on throughout the tournament.”The Friday play concluded with a straight set victory over West Liberty University.Caluori led the Pioneers with 11 kills, while Oberacker and Margaret Gillooly led the team with nine digs.Saturday play opened with a victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College as the Pioneers won in straight sets.Bruno thought that this was the best match the team played thus far in the season.“We just put forth a good team effort,” Bruno said. “First ball contact defensively and offensively. They were playing the game how I aspired the game to be played.”The tournament concluded against Shepherd University, and the Pioneers finished strong winning once again in straight sets. The 25-11 second set has been the most lopsided set thus far for the Pioneers who improved to 7-1 on the season with the win.“Winning all of our matches this weekend showed that we know how to play together,” Pugliese said. “We’re still working out some of the kinks, but every win is helping us improve more as a team.”The Pioneers will visit Kiski Area High School Wednesday to help support the Jam the Gym event, an event that began when the school’s assistant coach was diagnosed with leukemia for the third time. The event means a lot to Bruno who is visiting his alma mater.“It’s an emotional event with the passing of their assistant coach,” Bruno said. “The fact that it’s for a great cause and it’s a great way to get back home and get involved in the community is great.”Following that match will be the Point Park University Tournament in the Student and Convocation Center. This will be the first chance for students to see the team play an official match in the Student and Convocation Center.Their first match will be Friday at 10 a.m. against Asbury University. This match will open Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.Their second and final match of the day is scheduled for 6 p.m. against University of Rio Grande.Saturday will bring a rematch against West Liberty at 10 a.m. and a match against University of Northwestern Ohio at 2 p.m.Bruno expects this to be a solid and competitive tournament.“Obviously the biggest match in that tournament is the opener against Asbury,” Bruno said. “It’s a part of the tournament but also the only conference match. We have solid opponents coming in. Northwestern Ohio is 10-1 right now.  Asbury had 42 wins last year so it’s going to be good.”Furthermore, Bruno hopes students fill the Student and Convocation Center to support the Pioneers and “generate that interest on campus in the program.”
