Condom Carnival to be held Tuesday Evening

The conversation of sexual health has, in the past, been almost taboo within our society. Although it’s no secret that college students are having sex, the Resident Hall Association  (RHA) believes students should educate themselves on the subject. Thus Point Park University’s annual Condom Carnival was born and is currently in its third year, with a Haunted Halloween twist.”This event is a chance for all students to empower themselves through education of sexual health and awareness, ” RHA President Matthew Hofbauer said, who has been busy planning and getting donations for the carnival along with the rest of the RHA board and senate since the beginning of the fall semester.”As an important on-campus presence we are tying to continue the annual tradition of safe sex and sexual health with a Halloween theme,” RHA Treasurer Alex McDeavitt said.RHA is promoting their message of safe sex to students by bringing awareness to OK any sexually transmitted disease is avoidable in all situations, as long as one stays smart and thinks safety firstStudents planning to attend this year’s Carnival will receive free condoms the night of Oct. 29th in the Lawrence Hall ballroom from 9p.m. to 11p.m. Students will also have the opportunity to talk to professionals from local organizations, including Planned Parenthood and Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, who have supported RHA for the past three years.”These partnerships allow students to get valuable information in a comfortable setting,” RHA Vice President Lauren Campolongo said. Each of these organizations will have tables set up, allowing students to get, advice, and valuable information about sexual health and the organizations themselves.”It’s a fun alternative to learning about safe sex, rather than the uncomforted you felt in high school with the cheesy educational videos from the 1950’s,”  Campolongo said. But if this is not enough to entice one to enjoy a night in the ballroom, RHA has treats that will inevitably tempt one’s fall taste buds. There will be tons of Pittsburgh Popcorn in three various types, caramel apples and apple cider.”We have had about 15,000 condoms, donated to us so far, as well as the ones we have purchased and we are looking to have more by the time of the carnival,” Hofbauer said.RHA would also like to assure students that the condoms are reliable brands and are completely safe to use.Since the beginning of October, RHA has been looking for more support from local businesses by passing out letters stating who they were and what they were trying to achieve with the Condom Carnival. Several business and restaurants backed their efforts and responded by donating gift cards for prizes, but which local businesses and restaurants have not yet been determined. Along with receiving free condoms, students can also enjoy a night of games such as Condom Pong, Condom Darts, Pin the Condom, Undress, STD Bingo and Don’t Blow the Joker. For all of these games RHA is encouraging students to get a little competitive for prizes including gift cards, candy and other theme appropriate novelties. No one will be walking away empty handed from this fun Point Park event.”Every year we have such a great turn-out and success,” Campolongo said,  “it’s become a tradition on campus that all students can enjoy and respect.
