Conservatory’s new musical reminds us ‘It’s a Privilege to Pee’

Point Park will be ending its fall theater season with the production of “Urinetown,” a musical written by Greg Kotis.

The show is being directed and choreographed under Zeva Barzell, who is a faculty member at Point Park and will premiere on Dec. 9 and run until Dec. 14.

“Urinetown is about a town that has been going through a serious drought. The drought primarily affects the people living in poverty because they must pay to pee,” said Brittany Dorazio, a senior musical theater major. “If people do not abide by the laws they are sent to Urinetown for punishment. With all of this going on, there is a star-crossed lover story happening.”

Emma Feinberg is a junior musical theatre major and this is her first Conservatory show here at Point Park, although she has been in multiple productions outside of the Conservatory.  She was cast as the character of “Little Sally.”

“I was so happy. There is so much talent at this school. I just felt very humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to play Little Sally and be a part of such an amazing cast,” Feinberg said. “Everyone in the cast is hilarious and I was so excited to work with them.”

Senior musical theatre major Patrick Bovo, who also played John Quincy Adams in “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” will play the parts of Old Man Strong and Hot Blades Harry.

“Old Man Strong is part of the poor and…he just really has to pee. That’s all I’ll say about him,” Bovo said. “Hot Blades Harry comes in the second act. He’s sort of the leader of the Rebel Poor and an antagonist. He wants to cause harm to things and people that he feels are unjust.”

Morissa Trunzo, who is a junior musical theater major, will be playing the part of Hope Caldwell.  This is her first conservatory show.

“Words can’t even describe how excited I was. I’d never been cast here before and I haven’t been a lead in a musical since I was in eighth grade so it was certainly a special feeling,” Trunzo said.

“Urinetown” opens at The Playhouse on Dec. 9 through the 14. Students get free admission to the show.
