A screening of “The Devil Wears Prada” Nov. 12, will bring awareness to an important cause, and this is just one of the highlights on Point Park’s Fashion Club’s calendar this year.
Later in the month, a trendy clothing swap in West Penn Lobby will benefit the charity “Dress for Success.”
The year will be topped off with a trip to New York City, where they will meet with a major clothing designer.
“We are fashionable with a purpose,” the Secretary of Point Park’s Fashion Club Shalida Dobbins said.
The Fashion Club has made it a mission to be trendy, but found a way to meld charity and style with fun this year.
Founded in 2012 and passed down to junior Madison Taylor, the fashion club evolved and has become increasingly structured, creating ties with designers outside of the Pittsburgh area and various local charities.
“We want to create a connection,” Taylor said.
Teaming up with the Campus Activities Board (CAB), the screening of “The Devil Wears Prada” will be used to raise awareness for the charity Love 146. Love 146 is working to end child trafficking and exploitation. The screening will take place 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 12 in the JVH auditorium. A short documentary on Love 146 will be shown and refreshments and raffle prizes will be provided.
“It’s a big cause, it’s a pretty big thing, children being taken advantage of… and people need to be aware,” Dobbins said.
Along with Love 146, the members of the Fashion Club extended their accessorized hands to the Dress for Success foundation, a global non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women by using professional clothing, employment retention programs and providing ongoing support.
The club has planned a Clothing Swap where students can bring their gently-worn clothing and trade for something that will be new to them.
If you do not bring clothes, a $2 donation will be accepted. At the end of the trade, profit and remaining clothing will be donated to “Dress for Success.” The trade will take place Nov. 17 from 3-5 p.m.
The club is excited to prepare for its upcoming trip to New York City in the spring semester. While in the Big Apple, they will have the chance to visit the fashion line “Boy Meets Girl,” along with spreading fashion, helping charities and bringing students together in a trendy way.
“Fashion is an art form and should be spread,” Taylor said.
The club meets every Thursday in the Lawrence Hall lobby at 7 p.m. They encourage new members to come and join what they like to call a “fashionable group of friends.”
