Just Ducky Tours offer student job opportunities

Quack! Quack! Quack! A familiar sound to residents, students and workers of downtown Pittsburgh and for those who are wondering what is with all the quacking … it’s the Just Ducky Tours.Just Ducky is coming to Point Park University in search of fresh faces interested in becoming a part of the Just Ducky team for the upcoming season.Just Ducky is an hour-long tour that begins at Station Square. Guests of the tour board a DUWK boat, a six-wheeled amphibious truck that was created by General Motors to be used on land and in water in World War II.The DUWK then takes the riders through historic downtown, to Heinz Field and even into the river. A narrator elaborates on the history, facts and current events of the Pittsburgh area during the entire tour, according to the Just Ducky website.During the upcoming season, Just Ducky will be hiring approximately 20 new employees to become narrators and office personnel said Dana Carns, Operating Manager of the Just Ducky Tours, during a phone interview last Thurs.A narrator, or first-mate, rides in the DUWK boat along with a captain and works off of a script to elaborate the tour to riders.Office positions would require employees to work with guests on reservations and tickets, as well as handling money. The job will require training on safety and responsibility, along with a DVD that shows new employees what they need to talk about and what they are expected to do, according to Carns.Garrett Storm, a senior acting major, who has worked at the Just Ducky Tours for the past two summers, commented on his training experience last Wed. in the Lawrence Hall lobby.”You basically get a big script full of the information and you have to start memorizing that,” Storm said. “Then you come in for two weeks, three weeks if it takes you a little longer, and you sit in on other peoples tours and listen. You pick up information that way and the flow of everything.”Each narrator is able to add their own flare to the tour, Carns said.Anthony Costulas, a senior political science major, who has worked with Just Ducky for two summers and plans to work with them again this summer, spoke in the United Student Government Office last Wed. evening about how each narrator that he trained with brought their own unique entertainment to the tour. “They make you sit with different narrators too, because every narrator does it very differently,” said Costulas. “It’s all funny, but the energy is different from one person to another.” Carns is looking for upbeat and positive personalities in potential Just Ducky employees. “We’re looking for people that enjoy life,” Carns said. Applicants should be “very easy going and able to adapt to situations if need be.””Not only should potential Just Ducky employees have a bright and fun personality, they should also have knowledge of the city.”They need to start looking into being prepared in current events in Pittsburgh and know their history of Pittsburgh,” Carns said.As for hours, scheduling and flexibility, employees will be working on a part-time basis. Carns said that employees normally work 20-30 hours a week, or close to 40 if the employee is available.”I usually worked about three or four days a week,” Storm said. “Later in the season when it picks up, it tends to be a full day thing, about nine hours a day.”Carns also said that the applicant must be able to work one day on the weekend because of those days being the busiest. Applicants must also understand they will be working holidays as well.”I served as president of Student Government, and I had another job with the school while I was doing this one, so to say they are flexible is an understatement,” Costulas said. “They were really cool about everything I had to do.”Just Ducky provides their employees with a great work environment and a career building opportunity. They also offer job security for students who wish to return to a summer job year after year.”It’s the most fantastic summer job you can possibly have,” Costulas said. “On a summer day, I’ll meet three to four hundred different people that I get to talk and interact with on a daily basis. You just get to hang out with people.”Carns said they would be recruiting applicants this Feb. and begin training new employees in Mar., so they are prepared for opening day in April.  Students interested in applying with the Just Ducky Tours can visit company recruiters outside of the Point Café in Lawrence Hall on Feb. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. or they can go online to www.justduckytours.com and download an application under the contacts tab and fax the application to the number on the website.
