New improv comedy club offers ‘outlet’

Lara McCann-Moran’s decision to take an improvisation class ultimately guided her to meeting Alex Tracy, a Point Park University graduate who was the president of Point Park’s former improv club, Not Quite There.”Since he left, the group basically just dissolved,” McCann-Moran, 19-year-old acting sophomore, said last Wednesday in the Point Cafe. This chance encounter led to the start of one of Point Park’s newest clubs, Slow Clap, a revamped version of Not Quite There, that has been approved by United Student Government as a student organization as of the fall semester.”I think it offers both an outlet for performance and an outlet to better yourself in whatever you’re studying,” Tracy said during a phone interview last Friday. The improv club was “designed to provide an opportunity for students interested in improv to both perform and hone their craft,” according to the group’s webpage on the university’s website. It offers new members the chance to participate in weekly “jams” on Sunday nights. “A jam is when anybody can join our group and … test the waters,” said Jacob Pincus, 18-year-old freshman musical theater major and the club’s vice president, during a phone interview last Thursday.During the jams, the group plays simple improv games. All students are invited to join and encouraged to give improv a try. There is little pressure, and it gives students a chance to see what the club is about without fully committing, according to Pincus.”You can come and watch on a Sunday… but I can pretty much guarantee you that we’ll coax you into coming up onstage,” McCann-Moran said.Tracy, 22, believes students who are eager to participate and try something new should first see a show at the Steel City Improv Theatre in the Northside. He currently performs twice at week at the theatre and helps coach Slow Clap members once a week. McCann-Moran also offered advice for students who are unsure of the group and the uncertainty of performing with new people.”We’re not here to make fun of anyone,” McCann-Moran said. “It’s not like that. We would never call anyone out or make someone feel uncomfortable. It’s not about that.”Last semester, Slow Clap worked with the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company. They both performed a show on campus, which gave Slow Clap the opportunity to be the opening act. Before the show, Slow Clap members participated in a workshop with one of the members of the company.”It was really cool to meet someone who did it professionally, but also sort of showed us how not serious it was,” McCann-Moran said. “I think a lot of improvisers get caught up in that.”This semester, Slow Clap is working to plan a show, which is tentatively scheduled to be in March. The group is excited to show the campus what the club is about and they are hoping to get people to join or at least show interest in seeing more shows. For the most part, the show will be improvised, but it will also feature some sketches, according to McCann-Moran.”It’s always exciting to go to an improv show, because it’s a nice group feel,” Pincus said. “It’s spontaneous. It’s created then for the people at that moment and can never be recreated.”McCann-Moran encourages students to try improv because of the feeling it can elicit.”I’m intimidated, and I’m insecure, but it’s so much about just taking a chance,” McCann-Moran said. “When things go right, it feels really good, and it’s rewarding, and when thing goes wrong, it’s funny. You still get to laugh at yourself.”Interested students are invited to the group’s weekly jams at 7 p.m. Sunday in the John V. Hopkins auditorium.More information is also located on the group’s Facebook page called Slow Clap Improv Squad.
