Rockin’ Reviews

An announcement came earlier this week that the ever-popular (and not entirely deserved) hit show “Glee’s” cast would be growing with the addition of a relatively unknown singer named Darren Criss. Criss is rumored to be joining the show later this second season as the potential love interest for McKinley High’s most flamboyant glee club member, Kurt Hummel, played by Chris Colfer.”Glee” has become known for its famous guest spots – from Broadway superstars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, to Britney Spears and Uncle Jesse himself John Stamos this past week – but Criss is a no-name to the general public. Despite brief stints on the TV dramas “Eastwick” and “Little White Lie,” Criss’ “fame” has mostly come from the Internet and his roles as part of Team Starkid, a theater group comprised of current and former University of Michigan students responsible for the sensational YouTube videos “A Very Potter Musical” and “A Very Potter Sequel.” Criss played a spoof on Harry Potter in the parody show and also wrote all of the music and lyrics for “Sequel.””Glee” has never been on my to-watch list, mostly because of the over-acted melodrama and obvious autotuned voices. There is some talent amongst the cast, however, and if the rumors surrounding Criss are true, a new and refreshing voice will be added to the harmonies. This summer, Criss independently released a five-track EP titled “Human,” which peaked on the iTunes alternative albums chart. Following in the singer-songwriter vein of many striving musical artists before him, Criss describes his style as “soul-folk” with a single acoustic guitar often as the only instrument backing his vocals.Listeners familiar with Criss’ work as the title character in the “Potter” musicals will recognize the ballads on his debut EP. Both “Sami” (with reworked lyrics to become “Harry” in the musical) and “Not Alone” were highlights in the original “Potter” musical with their belting choruses and four-part harmonies.Regardless of their prominence in “Potter Musical,” “Sami” and “Not Alone” do not outshine any song on “Human.” In fact, the collection of five songs is so diverse, despite all being only comprised of Criss’ vocals and guitar, it is hard to choose a single stand-out song. The album’s title track, which is the first song Criss ever wrote and appropriately the opening number on “Human,” is bubbly and beachy, whereas “Jealousy” is tumultuous and verging on angry. Criss shows off his diversity on “Human,” which is what likely caught the attention of the “Glee” casting directors. His vocals are far from perfect, but that has not stopped “Glee” before. But sometimes it is the imperfections that make Criss appealing – less of a superstar and more of a normal guy simply strumming a guitar in his bedroom. “Human” is a perfect homage to his humble YouTube beginnings. As much as I claim to dislike the show, “Glee” has me tuning in every week just to watch the guest appearances. With Stamos now as a semi-regular cast member, Criss joining later this season, and the anticipated guest appearances of other celebrities, I can call myself a regular viewer. Hopefully Criss’ silky vocals will add some likeability to a show that has yet to enchant this viewer.
