Scholarships beneficial in college, after graduation

For a college student, receiving a scholarship is not just a financial help. Winning an award from an organization shows the dedication, work ethic and responsibility that employers look for in potential job candidates.Junior accounting major Eric Davis received this kind of recognition in the form of the Kuldeep Shastri Scholarship from the Pittsburgh chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI), a major financial organization. “We always love to have opportunities where we can shine the spotlight on some of our… awesome accounting students who go on to do really great things,” said Cheryl Clark, associate professor and chair of Point Park’s department of accounting, economics and finance, and information technology. “We love it when we get the opportunity to showcase those individuals to the community.”Clark, along with other accounting professors, nominated Davis to recieve the FEI scholarship. FEI also awarded a scholarship to one student from each of several other Pittsburgh-area colleges, including the University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, according to Clark.”The accounting faculty at Point Park selected [Davis] based on his great GPA and his commitment to the accounting profession. He is a student that we feel is going to excel in the profession, and basically, he’s a good guy, and we recognized that,” Clark said in her West Penn office on Monday.Davis, a native of Cranberry, Pa., enjoyed math as a Seneca Valley High School student and decided that accounting would be a good fit for him. He chose Point Park because of its urban location.Davis is a member of the University’s Student Accounting Association, and he plays intramural sports in his free time.Davis accepted the scholarship at an awards banquet on March 19 at the Duquesne Club.”It was an honor,” said Davis in the Lawrence Hall lobby on Wednesday. “It was nice to receive something from outside of Point Park and be recognized for academics.”The awards banquet served as a valuable networking opportunity as well as a positive addition to his resume, as he had the opportunity to talk to financial professionals from companies like U.S. Steel.”I think this is going to help him out in a lot of different ways,” said Clark, who also attended the awards banquet. “If [Davis] applies for a position in the Pittsburgh area, in all likelihood, somebody…in this organization will be a member of Financial Executives International, and that’s probably going to give him a leg up if they see that this is one of their award winners.”Since Davis hopes to work for a Pittsburgh company after graduation, he said he is grateful for the opportunity to meet some of the area’s top financial professionals and receive a scholarship from their organization.”It’ll help me pay off my tuition obviously, but it’s also a good thing to put on my resume. Financial Executives International is a pretty well known group,” Davis said.Fellow accounting students and faculty noticed Davis’s commitment to his schoolwork.Junior accounting and dance double major Jessica Calzi met Davis this year in their shared accounting classes taught by Clark.”[Davis] is very smart, and he always knows what he’s doing. If I ever need help, I know I can always ask him,” said Calzi in the Lawrence Hall lobby on Thursday. “I think he totally deserves [this scholarship] because he works really hard, and he’s just a great person as well as a great student.”Davis’s scholarship will benefit him as both a student and a college graduate.”He has the attributes of a top accounting student,” Clark said, “and I know [Davis] is going to do a lot of good things in his career.”
