Lead singer of AWOLNATION, Aaron Bruno, expressed what he hoped fans could take away from their live show.“Hopefully to have the time of their lives,” Bruno said.AWOLNATION headlined the fourth stop of its “Never Let Your Fear Decide Your Fate” tour on Sept. 13 at the Altar Bar. The show had multiple opening acts, which included Imagine Dragons. “There have only been a handful of shows so far, but the tour … is going really well so far,” Imagine Dragons keyboardist Kenny Carkeet said before the show. White Wives was the first to play and though the room was barely half full, the band played as if it was in front of thousands with bassist Chris Barker swinging from the low hanging beams and standing on drum kits. The crowd favorite of their set was a cover of The Pixies “Where is my Mind?”Zeale, a rambunctious rapper, came to the stage next and was only joined onstage by a drummer. The young indie/hip hop artist hardly stood still for a second through his set getting the crowd involved with constant jumping and fist pumping.Imagine Dragons, easily being able to headline a tour of this size, played many songs of its album “Night Visions,” and of course its most popular song to date, “It’s Time,” with almost deafening singing coming from the crowd rather than the stage. Dan Reynolds had been feeling sick leading up to the show, but the crowd took care of most of the singing for him. After hours of music, AWOLNATION finally arrived on stage to an echo of loud screams and cheers.Bruno stated he had played at the Altar Bar before with previous bands and that it was his favorite to play in the city. When explaining what he enjoyed about the venue he said that it had “spiritual energy” as it is a hollowed-out old church.
If one thing was clear through the night was the amount of enthusiasm the crowd had. At the beginning of the show Bruno instigated to get as many crowd surfers as possible through the track “Not Your Fault.” During the explosive radio hit “Sail,” the energy shifted immensely, almost as if the crowd got a new kick of adrenaline.“Looking back it’s a very simple catchy song that just happens to have some lyrics that people relate to, and I’m really lucky I said them at the moment I did,” Bruno said. “A lot of song writing and commercial success and all that kind of thing has a lot to do with timing, and pop culture and the stars aligning.”It got the biggest rise out of the crowd of the night of all the music played. Although it may have gotten the biggest reaction in Pittsburgh, Bruno says every night is different.“Obviously anytime you play those songs that have been on the radio they have that radio energy,” Bruno said. “Then there are those songs that you play that are deeper cuts on the album that haven’t seen all the commercial success as the others but they have more of that cult following vibe which is powerful in an even deeper way.”After the concert, Point Park sophomore student Melanie Vadney realized the show had exceeded her expectations. “I expected to enjoy Imagine Dragons a lot more than AWOLNATION since I was so familiar with them,” Vadney said, “but [AWOLNATION’s] live show ended up blowing me away.”
