Taylor Hornung, a junior animation major, decorates her team’s Toy Story themed cake as a part of the Campus Activities Board (CAB) Cake-Off on Nov. 19 in the West Penn Lobby.
First, there was a Monsters Inc. round cake depicting all the doors used to scare kids by a group of Point Park students.
A second cake in last week’s “Pixar cake-off” featured a toy story cake with Woody, Buzz and the Alien.
Finally, five students built an underwater “Finding Nemo” cake featuring turtles, Nemo and seaweed.
At the end, judges voted only one cake the winner, but everyone present at the Campus Activities Board’s (CAB) Annual Cake-Off was victorious because they got to make their cake and eat it, too.
“We use it to bring people together and give them a sense of community,” Ally Stacy, a CAB member, said.
The cake-off is an annual event put together by CAB where three teams of five decorate a themed cake. The cake-off is a competition to determine which team makes the best themed cake.
The first cake, a Monsters Inc. cake, featured the doors from the movie, including the pink-flowered, white door from one of the main movie characters. The black team was very confident they would win the competition.
“I feel we have the best topic,” Jason Irwin, one of the bakers on the black team, said.
The team hoped that confidence would pay off with victory.
“We’re the ride or die team,” Josie Widing said.
The second cake, a Toy Story cake, featured Buzz Lightyear’s wings, Woody’s shirt and boots complete with a snake, and the head of the famous toy alien from Pizza Planet. Of the five members on the blue team, two of them had done the competition the previous year. The team hoped that experience would pay off with victory.
The third cake, a “Finding Nemo” cake, featured turtle, Peach, Dory, some seaweed and Nemo himself riding along the East Australian Current, just like the movie itself.
The team, complete with their own pink shirts, decorated their cake fast and hard, hoping to win the competition. Team Pinkxar hoped their determination would pay off with victory.
This year’s competition offered a more fun option than the previous cake-off competition.
“Last year, we had wedding cakes,” Taylor Hornung, a member of the blue team, said.
This year’s theme offered more for the teams to work with.
“It lets us be more creative,” Audrey Eisentrout, another member of the blue team, said. This year’s theme offered more creativity than before.
In the end, judges deliberated for moments before finally selecting a winner. The winner would be the black team’s Monsters Inc. cake, complete with the logo and doors.
