Globe’s Point: The importance of Black History Month

Happy week six and Valentine’s Day, Pioneers! Whether you have a romantic partner or not, we hope you feel a little holiday spirit and, most importantly, take care of and treat yourself. It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the semester. It is only going to get crazier and busier from here, so always practice self-care.

For this week’s issue and Globe’s Point, the Globe logos were changed to support Black History Month. While February is the shortest month of the year, that does not diminish its importance and significance. And while Black History Month is in February in part because of Abraham Lincoln, it is critical to take extra time this month to educate ourselves on the entire Black experience.

Black History Month is an opportunity to understand Black histories, going beyond stories of racism and slavery to spotlight Black achievement. Despite historic, and sadly even current, oppression, there are so many examples of Black achievements in the arts, sciences and more, and we must not limit ourselves to a single-story mindset.

Our very own Black Student Union, which has an office on the second floor of the Student Center, is a great example of this, and we highly encourage students to get involved so BI-POC (Black and Indigenous People of Color) voices are heard and always considered when making decisions involving the university.

Not sure how to honor Black History Month? A great way to start is by supporting local Black-owned businesses. Visit Pittsburgh has a great resource for local restaurants, clothing and accessory stores and health and wellness shops. Another great way is to open up the conversation with those around you. Acknowledge Black History Month personally, not just professionally, and commit to educating yourself outside of February.

This year’s theme is African Americans and the Arts. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. Commit to diversifying your music playlists, watch lists and reading lists this month and every month. Look into who are behind these songs, shows, films and books. Read their stories. The artist is equally as important as the art.

Happy Black History Month!
