Paranormal Pittsburgh Youtubers Audrey and Bella visited Point Park over winter break to investigate the well-known ghost called the “Shuffler,” a spirit believed to be the ghost of Supreme Court Justice Michael Musmanno, who lived in Lawrence Hall when it transitioned from a hotel in 1967.
Although they didn’t run into any shuffling, before the night ended a ghost said that it wanted to hurt one of them.
“We were a little scared, but it was also talking about ‘god’ and other religious things,” Audrey said. The two girls omitted their last names for privacy reasons.
To find activity, they visited the Lawrence Hall fourth-floor conference room, an office in the Department of Literature Culture and Society on the seventh floor and the Thayer Hall JVH Auditorium.
Maria Ochoa, a permanent resident of the school and the director of student life gave them her ID to explore campus that night. She said that when she saw the girls again after their investigation, they looked pale.
“There was a voice that said in JVH that it was going to hurt Bella,” Ochoa said. “That’s when they said, we’re done. We’re leaving. I was like, can you hear that on your recording? Yeah, we heard it.”
The two heard the threat while Bella was doing something called the Estes method, Audrey said. The Estes method is a ghost-hunting technique where one investigator wears a blindfold and noise-canceling headphones to block out their senses. The headphones are hooked to a spirit box that filters through different radio frequencies. A spirit can pick out voices on this frequency so that it can communicate.
The two also used tools like a REMpod, EMF detector and EDP recorder, according to Audrey. The purpose of these tools was to detect movement within electromagnetic energy.
Ochoa said that, after hearing about their experience, she didn’t sleep that night and left every light and her TV on in her 19th-floor apartment.
“Living on the 19th floor, I’ve experienced a lot of strange things in my eight years in the apartments up here,” Ochoa said. ”Things move around, things fall, all weird sounds. I’ve experienced it all”
Audrey said that being threatened by a Point Park spirit wasn’t their most scary ghost-hunting encounter in the Burgh. For example, there was the time she and Bella visited Green Man’s Tunnel in South Park and were chased out by a real man with a machete.
Although the two wanted to investigate the 13th floor and other residential hallways, they didn’t get the chance since it was too bright and the lights couldn’t be turned off, Ochoa said.
Audrey and Bella gained most of their 40 thousand subscribers through TikTok in May. After two of their videos went viral they got 30,000 and then 50,000 subscribers.
“We’ve been using TikTok just like our main marketing pool because we find that a lot of like the younger audience is on there,” Audrey said.
