While Pioneer Records has been forthcoming on its annual Pioneer Star showcase, the process behind finding these stars and making them shine is a show itself.
As Director of PR Operations, Cooper Slocum manages three other directors. Directors Alexa Zak takes charge over Graphic Design, Nichole Bartolomeo oversees Booking and Talent and Grace Thomas leads PR and Social Media. Slocum also plans and executes music events on campus.
However, Slocum said selecting a Pioneer Star is a thoughtful process. Even though he’s the director of Pioneer Records, Slocum said that he does not choose who gets to be a star or not because of his position.
“It’s a collaborative effort between the four directors, some of the SAEM staff members and producers at Red Caiman Studios,” Slocum said. Balance and fairness are valued during this process, allowing those wanting to be a star to have a fair chance, according to Slocum.
First, applications open in July and, this year, the deadline may be extended to early October. Application notices such as QR codes on posters or TV advertisements are displayed around Point Park. The requirements? Submitting and recording original music.
There is no need for fancy instruments to back up a singer’s voice. A simple guitar backing track can be chosen, or potential performers can instead choose an acapella. As long as it’s original, you can send in a rough draft of your songs.
After applications close, all people involved offer their respective inputs. The process narrows down to six applicants. Different opinions, perspectives and backgrounds ranging from students to professionals are considered. Then, three finalists are chosen as the next Pioneer Stars.
“All three of them get their personally designed album cover,” Slocum said. “[They] get their own single recorded in Red Cabin Studios.
Additionally, Pioneer Stars get content created for them thanks to several departments and students.
