BSU to hold Black History Month events

A sweetheart ball will be held on Feb. 14 in the Lawrence Hall ballroom to celebrate Black History Month.

“Emmitt Till” and “4 Little Girls” are only two of the many movies being shown at Point Park University in February that deal with black history.

An open mic night featuring student performances will take place on Feb. 26 in the GRW Theatre at 7 p.m.

These are among many events that will highlight Black History Month at Point Park.

“It is not just to enlighten African-Americans about Black History Month, but it is to enlighten everyone, and to not only see the sad things that we have been through but all the accomplishments that we have made throughout history,” said Taylor Johns, senior criminal justice major and president of the Black Student Union.

Black History Month has been celebrated since 1926. It was first known as “Negro History Week.” Carter Woodson, who founded it, decided to change it to the entire month of February to honor the births of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas because of their huge influence in African-American history.

The importance of celebrating Black History Month varies among individuals.

The month-long celebration will begin at 3 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the Lawrence Hall lobby. Speeches about the upcoming events will be given by Johns; Romeo Harp, events coordinator; Janielle Pratt, secretary; Cliff Green, treasurer; and Paul Hennigan, president of Point Park University. Refreshments will be served.

“I am going to welcome the people, invite them to our events and to enjoy the activities and to learn something new,” Green, senior business management major, said.

The sweetheart ball is semiformal. It is $3 for singles and $5 for couples. It will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Ballroom in part to celebrate Black History Month.

All the movies planned in February in some way relate to black history. Every Tuesday in the month of February, and on Thursday, Feb. 12, BSU will be hosting a free movie night in the JVH auditorium at 7 p.m.
