New presidential first lady, new appraoch to fashion

When it comes to fashion, the first ladies of the White House know exactly how to make a statement. Barbara Bush stuck to motherly attire, Hillary Clinton wore mostly pantsuits and Laura Bush wore classics such as Oscar de la Renta. Then, along comes Michelle Obama, whose youth and grace in the fashion community has not been seen since Jackie O.

Obama’s style has grown to hit home with fashionistas. When it comes to dressing, the first lady has learned how to express herself.

Obama wooed America at the inaugural balls with her glamorous gown and sparkling jewels.

According to The New York Times, Jason Wu, the designer of Obama’s dress, had no idea what the first lady would even wear to the inaugural ball. Wu never met her, nor did he know that his design for her dress was even being contemplated. As he watched the festivities on television, he was not even sure that the white chiffon dress she wore was actually his until his phone began ringing off the hook.

“It’s priceless to be a part of history,” Wu told the New York Times.

Obama’s gown by Wu was white, fluffy and layered, with a one-shoulder strap and was spotted with flowers and crystals, Cathy Horyn of The New York Times wrote.

“If Mrs. Obama is a different and more stylish first lady than the country has seen in a while, she proved it Tuesday with some striking fashion choices,” Horyn wrote.

The New York Times also asserted that Obama’s brilliant yellow inaugural outfit was almost designed to stand out against the traditional red and dismal black coats on the Capitol steps.

The yellow inaugural outfit, designed by Isabel Toledo, was made of Swiss wool lace, had netting along the back for warmth and was lined in French silk, Horyn wrote. A cardigan was also worn over Obama’s sleeveless dress. She was wearing light green gloves and a stunning flat necklace with clear stones. Her green gloves were from J. Crew, who also designed daughters Malia and Sasha’s royal blue and pink coats.
