Even though the snot is still crystalizing in our noses the instant we step outside, a thaw is on the horizon for Point Parkers. The daffodils may still be dead under the ground, our shoes may be soggy with slush, and we may still be layering coats on cardigans – but spring will spring at last next week.
Or at least Spring Break will.
It’s been a rough month and a half for many students, we know. Between the cold and clubs and jobs, our responsibilities have seemed a little overwhelming this semester. We’d have been perspiring more if our sweat glands weren’t frozen.
But now, that blessed event, the midsemester break from it all (or at least most of it) has finally arrived. As Alien from the movie “Spring Breakers” famously said, “Sprang break forever.”
Enjoy this time off, everyone. While many of you will still have jobs to go to or homework to complete, taking some time for relaxing and letting a little loose is vital for your overall mental health.
Some students will take this time to travel, hopefully somewhere warm. We hope those students enjoy their time with the sun and send it our kindest regards.
Others will merely catch up on sleep and most likely binge a couple shows on Netflix. We recommend all seven seasons of “The West Wing.” Even though the show drops in quality a bit after Aaron Sorkin’s departure, it is nonetheless an inspiring look into the United States government and will inspire students to enact meaningful change in the world in any way they can.
Or perhaps someone on the Globe staff just really likes “The West Wing” and wishes she had someone with whom to discuss its moral complexities and fully-realized characters.
Either way, we hope this break provides the rejuvenation so many have been waiting for. In these cold, gray months, it can be hard to drag ourselves to class and do the work of being both students and at least semi-functional adults.
But it’s important work. It’s vital that, even when it’s hardest, when it feels most impossible, we continue on. We are working for our futures and for unique goals specific to each individual on this campus. We are here for a reason, and we need to keep that in mind.
So take this week for yourself. Do what you need to do, and have fun doing it. Remind yourself why all the jobs and homework and chilliness will be worth it in the end. Remember what brought you here. It probably wasn’t an accident.
This semester is important. You are important, and you will do important things. That’s what it means to be a Point Park student.
No matter if you are off adventuring in distant lands or only beneath multiple layers of blankets, the Globe staff wishes you the best this spring break. We hope you come back to school refreshed and ready to finish out the Spring 2015 semester stronger than ever. And, hopefully, at least slightly warmer.
