Budget debate pits club funding against gifts

The United Student Government’s finance committee stood in front of a full house when it presented the funds allocated to various student clubs at Monday’s meeting. The seats were filled with clubs’ representatives waiting to see how much their club received compared to their initial request, but few clubs received the full amount.Representatives of some clubs asked that their fund requestsbe amended because of a miscommunication between club leaders and the finance committee about what the funds were being used for or because they had already committed to spending the amount of money that was originally requested.”I would suggest not entering into any contract when you know you’re not guaranteed any money,” said John Morgan, president pro-tempore.Clubs are expected to provide the remainder of their funding requests for themselves. Some were given money, while others were left to fundraise. The Action Sports Club own clothing line to raise funds for the club through sales.Alongside these clubs, a student web series called “Phenomelogic” also requested a portion of the budget. Some representatives opposed the idea because they did not feel it would “ultimately benefit the student body.”Brianne Feindt, senior business representative, argued the series, which would be broadcast on YouTube, would show people “what Point Park can do.”Representatives also held differing opinions about funding for cheerleading warm-up outfits to be worn over the cheerleading uniforms in cold winter months. Some felt that they should receive warm-up outfits bought with the allocated money as gifts for their hard work all year, while others felt that the budget did not allow room for gifts.”I think it comes down to our responsibility with student money,” Morgan said.A majority vote decided the warm-up outfits would remain the property of the school as the regular cheerleading outfits currently do.USG also formally submitted a proposal requesting the communication of mid-term grades to students by all professors. The proposal was voted through by the legislative body and will be submitted to administration for consideration.
