Club hosts event on women empowerment

“Bombshells in Business,” an event hosted by Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG), will help women who attend to “position their goals,” according to Shaquela Myrick.“We wanted to target juniors and seniors who are sort of in the transitioning process between going into their careers versus an internship,” said Myrick on Thursday in Village Park.“Bombshells in Business” will be held at the Renaissance Hotel on April 28 and will run from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and will feature a panel of women, who work in professional field, who will speak and take questions from the women who attend.“Basically we’re having workshops on women empowerment, and there is a panel of [5] women in predominantly male-driven fields in the workforce and they are
going to talk about their experiences and their careers,” said junior psychology major Breeann Wilson in the Student Center on Monday.Women in attendance will have the opportunity to ask questions to Jennifer Bullano, the communications director for the Pittsburgh Penguins; Margaret Graham, the communications coordinator for East Liberty Development Inc.; Dr. Marsha Lovett, a psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU); Cassie Pisone, the social media coordinator for American Eagle; and Tiara Whitfield, the Program Manager
for SWSG.
SWSG tried to bring in women from a variety of fields so there was something for everyone.

“[Shaquela] didn’t want them all concentrated in one sort of career path so that girls coming wouldn’t say ‘this is all about communications there is no point for me to be there,’” said senior psychology major Karly Shorts in the Student Center on Monday.“Unfortunately, we couldn’t hit every career opportunity.” Not including too many different careers was by design, however. Shorts said the goal was to make the panel more  “intimate” and “personal.”“I know that [Shaquela] wanted it to be these women talking about their experiences, goals and things like that so that it wasn’t very stale, like ‘let’s move through the motion,’” said Shorts. “She wanted it to be more like a discussion [and
not them] talking and us just staring at them.”“Bombshells in Business” is not open to only Point Park students either. Because SWSG has branches in most Pittsburgh schools, including the University of Pittsburgh, CMU and Carlow University, the event will be open to any women
who wish to attend.“It’s majorly publicized at Point Park, but it’s going to be open to the public,” Myrick, a senior advertising and public relations major, said.SWSG members think this will be a good opportunity for women to come see others who have been successful in the working world and be inspired by them.“It’s good to hear the success stories too to know that they had a goal, they were willing to work for it and they achieved it. To know that you can do what you want to do to,” said senior intelligence and national security major Lauren Vernail in the Student Center on Monday.
Myrick said “Bombshells in Business” will also be a place for women to network in the professional world. She also said she thinks “Bombshells in Business” will
have a strong impact on all those who attend.“I think it’s going to revitalize people who come there. I think it is going to give them the extra energy, the extra inspiration to let go of their inhibitions and really just go after their dreams,” Myrick said. “I think that girls who leave this panel are going to know exactly what they want and how to get it. For the Point Park community, I think it’s going to make underclassmen ready for the summer and ready to come back and work
in new clubs.”
