Family Weekend gives families opportunity to explore the city

Michelle Iglesias plans on showing her family some of her favorite hangouts, restaurants and parts of Pittsburgh when her family comes to visit her on Family Weekend.

Theater performances from Point Park students are why Robert Brant is excited for his family to visit as he can’t wait to show his family the talent.

Angela D’Occhio’s parents are most excited for the Java and Jazz event in Village Park, and to see a show playing at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

Iglesias, Brant and D’Occhio are among the many students with family visiting Oct. 10-12 for Point Park’s annual Family Weekend.

As of Sept. 30, about 564 registrations have been made. Registration closed on Oct. 3.

During Family Weekend, families of current students can watch dance shows, student films and explore Pittsburgh.

There are a variety of events on campus, such as “Java and Jazz In The Park” and A Night At The Movies. There are also free tickets available for places around Pittsburgh, such the Pittsburgh Zoo or the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

The weekend then ends with a Sunday Brunch.

Iglesias, a transfer Acting major, is excited to show her family some of her favorite sights such as Mt. Washington and Point State Park. They are traveling all the way from Miami, Fla. to visit her.

“I think I’m going to show them Pittsburgh myself,” Iglesias said. “I want to show them the school, the places I hang out with my friends and some of my favorite restaurants,” Iglesias said.

Brant, a freshman musical theater major, plans on spending time with his mother and sister along with going to see the shows that Point Park has planned.

“We are just going to hang out, go see some of the theater performances, [eat] dinner and just really spend time as a family,” Brant said.

D’Occhio, a sophomore acting major, is excited to see her family for the first time in about a month. They are traveling from Delaware, which is about a five-hour trip by car.

She plans on taking them up the incline since it’s somewhere they’ve never been in the city. They also plan on visiting the Playhouse to see a show since her parents really enjoyed seeing one last year when they came for Family Weekend.

“I’m really excited to see my family, we’re really close.  I’m also excited to show them around Pittsburgh again, they really love visiting here,” D’Occhio said.

Dean Keith Paylo and the Office of Student Affairs have planned an eventful weekend for students and their families including arrangements to have free tickets to the zoo, which has been sold out.

A looping shuttle service to the hotspots of Pittsburgh such as The Strip District, Station Square, and Southside will also be available.

At night, students will be showing some of the movies they made and dancers will be giving a special performance that is for Family Weekend only.

On Saturday night, there will also be a “Java and Jazz” event in Village Park where they are bringing in a local Jazz artist to perform.

And as a final goodbye, the weekend closes with a Sunday Brunch.

“The idea of Family Weekend is to connect families and students back together again after the beginning of the school year. For many families, this is the first time they [will be] able to see their sons and daughters [since move-in],” Paylo said.
