Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Confirmed to the Supreme Court

Written By August Stephens, Opinions Editor

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has been officially confirmed to the Supreme Court. She was nominated by President Joe Biden earlier in 2022 after the announced retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will serve as the first Black woman on the United States Supreme Court. She will be serving with all qualifications under her belt, including an education from Harvard University and Harvard Law School. Justice Jackson is a wife and mother of two daughters.

She is now the 116th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, according to the White House government website. Although she is one of many succeeding Justices, she will not receive the privilege which is usually associated with the role.

Intersectionality needs to be taken into account when discussing the politics of the modern day Supreme Court. Throughout the vast majority of history it has been led by old, white males who were born into a systematically oppressive, patriarchal society. They not only assumed roles of toxic masculinity, but embraced it as American culture. These men rule the Supreme Court from the time they are elected to their death. Even if they are beginning to change with the times in the 2020s, there are still 40 more years where their right-wing ruling will be a detriment to what the general public refers to as a democracy.

There have only been four non-white Justices in the history of the United States Supreme Court, and three of them are currently serving on the Court, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. As a Black woman, her voice will likely only be shoved under the metaphorical rug which are the Justice’s remarks and public Twitter replies.

It is absolutely abhorrent that now her voice will be drowned out by white people and one Black man. For those of you wondering why I included Clarence Thomas, it is because he believes in the overturn of Roe v. Wade and Obergefell vs. Hodges. These are major historical legal decisions. Roe v. Wade is obviously the case for abortion rights, and Obergefell vs. Hodges is the case which legalized gay marriage in the United States in 2015.

I strongly believe that she deserves the most respect out of any of the judges, solely based on her experience, intellect, and determination to adhere to the law. The Supreme Court is an extremely corrupt institution which typically votes the opposite decision that the public is in need of at that moment in time.

It is a common misconception that the Supreme Court upholds the ideals and values which are kind and respectful to all people. The Justices only care about the guaranteed money they make every year after deciding the moral and legal fate of millions of Americans every year.

The legacy of the Supreme Court is rapidly going downhill as a result of petty packing of the court. Amy Coney Barrett should have never had the option to join the Court.

Although no one is without their flaws, Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be ashamed.
