‘Burgh Bites: REESE’s cup new flavors

One thing I have learned from working at Walmart over the summer is that it is very difficult to not impulsively spend your money in the same place where you earn it. It’s harder when you’re a cashier who is forced to watch customers purchase hot food, dinner and snacks all day.

I don’t like eating sweets often, but over time, I became curious as I saw the new flavors of Reese’s Cups on our shelves. So, my coworker and I decided to purchase two different flavors separately and split them. There are multiple Reese’s Cup varieties but for the sake of this review, I’m going to focus on the Reese’s Puffs cup and the potato chip cup. After trying both, I can conclude that the addition of potato chips or cereal does not change the fact that a Reese’s Cup is a Reese’s Cup.

However, there is a more favorable option between the two. One has a superior crunch factor.

Despite having a crunchy texture, the Reese’s Cup with the Reese’s Puffs in it tasted normal. It was a little smashed after sitting in my purse for a week, but I know that the shape didn’t change the overall flavor. I tasted the cups during my 15 minute break at work. All of the smart cashiers took their 15 minute breaks in the front of the store, inside of the store’s Subway. There, I let the chocolate spread throughout my palate. The flavor was not all that different from a regular Reese’s Cup; the only noticeable difference was that of a Reese’s cereal aftertaste.

During that 15 minute break, as I took notes on my phone, I explained to a co-worker that my purpose of seriously comparing these two cups was to write a review for a printed publication. He didn’t think that I was being serious.

The next flavor, the potato chip Reese’s Cup, had initially been my favorite of the two until I tried them both side by side. I bit into the one with potato chips and noticed an immediate difference. Not in flavor, but in the crunch. As I bit down I noticed that the crunch in this cup was long lasting while in the other, the cereal dissolved in my mouth. The flakes of potato chips were coarse and at one point I almost injured the roof of my mouth. While on the other hand, the one with Reese’s Puffs retained the smooth and creamy texture that chocolate and peanut butter should have together.

The Puffs cup creates a whole new Reese’s experience. The addition of the cereal provides a crunch that dissolves in your mouth and ends with a smooth, creamy texture. It’s very similar to the original but with a small twist. The potato chip cup is still good; it’s still a Reese’s Cup, after all. However, if I was given an option of continuing to chew on chip flakes like shards of glass over the dynamic crunch of the cereal, I know which one I would choose.
