It was an overall successful soccer game Saturday against St. Mary of the Woods College for Point Park University, with the women’s soccer team tying 1-1 and the men winning 9-0.

The women’s team came ready to play out the gate in game one. Their early pressure paid off as junior midfielder Vanessa Vazquez scored at 7:34 on an assist from sophomore defender Mireya Rojas.

The Pioneers were able to hold the St. Mary Pomeroys to only three shots in the game, with two shots being in the first half and one in the second. But that lone shot in the second half from freshman midfielder Paige Chickadaunce snuck by Point Park goalkeeper Ella Serlin for an unassisted goal at 62:55 in the game.

The Pioneers would end up with eight shots in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to get by St. Mary goalkeeper Kaylee Thaler. Both teams would settle for a 1-1 tie. Point Park now sits at fourth place in the River States Conference (RSC) with a 2-1-1 record.

The men’s leading scorer, midfielder Philipp Harder, got things going in game two on an unassisted goal at 21:28 in the first half.

Shortly after, junior forward Genildo Postimo had a corner kick that led to a highlight reel bicycle kick goal from junior midfielder Giovanni Pezzi. The video of Pezzi’s incredible goal is available to watch at pointparksports.com.

To close out the scoring in the first half, senior forward Matheus Lima scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season, to make it 3-0  at 41:28 in the game.

The Pioneers offense continued to flourish in the second half when Philipp Harder scored his second goal of the game off a pass from junior forward and fellow countryman Moritz Sarfert. Harder now sits second among RSC goal scoring leaders with 11, and third in points 25.

Four minutes after Harder’s goal, freshman defender Baptiste Ferrand headed in a corner kick from Genildo Postimo to score his first goal of the season.

Mortiz Sarfert scored on a breakaway at 66:58 on a pass from junior midfielder Alexis Lamontagne to extend the Pioneers’ lead to 6-0.

Matheus Lima scored his second of the game on a rebound at 70:23, with Giovanni Pezzi getting the assist.

The Pioneers made it 8-0 when freshman midfielder Facundo Nunez scored his first of the year on an assist from senior defender Ethan Villa.

Mortiz Sarfert capped off Point Park’s scoring in the final minute of the game with his second goal of the day on an assist from senior defender Agustin Rodriguez, making the final score against St. Mary of the Woods College 9-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Eduard Garcia posted his fourth shutout of the season.

With a 4-0 record in conference play, Point Park sits in second place of the RSC behind Rio Grande, who has a 6-0 conference record.

The men and womens soccer teams will be on the road this week as they take on Ohio Christian on Thursday with the women playing at 1 p.m., and the men at 3:30 p.m.
