Point Park split their softball doubleheader with West Virginia State at Fairhaven Park Sunday as its two seniors were honored on Senior Day.
The Pioneers were able to close out a 5-4 victory in Game 1, while West Virginia State responded in Game 2 with a 7-1 win.
West Virginia State pounced on Point Park in the first inning of Game 1, sending eight batters to the plate and putting three runs on the board. Point Park immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Mia Arndt worked a leadoff walk followed by an Ava Hubble RBI double and an RBI double for Emma Henry that cut the Pioneer deficit to 3-2.
The Pioneers were able to keep the scoring going in the second with some two-out magic. Arndt got it started with a double, then came home on an RBI single by Hubble, who later scored on a Gianna Welsh single to center that was misplayed by West Virginia State. Point Park led 4-3 through two innings.
The next scoring chance for either team came in the fifth, with West Virginia State loading the bases with nobody out. Starter Julia Johnson was able to get herself out of the jam however, inducing a force out at home before getting two consecutive fly outs to preserve the Pioneers’ narrow lead.
Mia Arndt continued her strong game in the bottom half of the frame, crushing a solo home run to right-center to add some cushion to the Point Park lead. It was Arndt’s fifth home run of the season.
Point Park would carry their 5-3 lead into the seventh inning, and after getting the first out of the final frame, West Virginia State cut the deficit in half with a solo home run. A fielding error and a single put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base, but Julia Johnson was able to come up clutch once again, inducing a game-ending double play and in the process securing a 5-4 victory for the Pioneers.
Offensively, Arndt and Hubble led the way for the Pioneers, with Arndt going 2-3 with a home run and two runs scored and Hubble going 3-4 with two RBI’s. Johnson went all seven for Point Park, giving up 12 hits but only 4 runs in earning her sixth win of the season.
In Game 2, Olivia Bell and West Virginia State responded in a big way. In the second, Bell doubled and scored on an Avery Contreras RBI double to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Then in the third, Bell came up to the plate with two runners in scoring position and delivered a two run single to stretch the Yellow Jacket lead to 3-0.
West Virginia State would continue adding on in the 5th inning after a two-run single by Baylee Smith stretched the lead to 5-0. A solo shot by Bell later in the inning gave the Yellow Jackets a comfortable 6-0 cushion.
Point Park avoided being shut out as Ava Hubble continued a strong doubleheader performance with a solo home run to left, the first of her career. That would be the only offense for the Pioneers in Game 2, as they fell to West Virginia State 7-1.
The doubleheader split moved Point Park to 9-29 overall and 3-17 in MEC play, while West Virginia State moved to 18-22 and 7-13 in MEC play.
Seniors Kaylee Fabiano and Gianna Welsh were honored before the games in the 2026 Senior Day Ceremony. Both Fabiano and Welsh have spent the last four years at Point Park and as members of the softball program.
The Pioneers are next in action April 22 at 3:00 p.m. with a doubleheader against Salem from Fairhaven Park.
