Globe’s Point: Don’t be discouraged by new graduation date

Happy week two of the semester, Pioneers! We hope you had a great first week and are settling into your new class schedules. Remember to take care of yourself and stay organized. Being a college student is very hard work, and we are so proud of you.

We are especially proud of all the seniors graduating at the end of this semester, which leads us to what this week’s Globe’s Point is about. As covered in our news section this week, graduation has been moved to Friday, Apr. 26 instead of the following Saturday. Ceremonies will still be held at normal times. Graduate hooding ceremonies will be at 9 a.m. Undergraduate commencement will be at 12:30 p.m., right in the beginning and middle of the day.

While there are still four months until graduation, many of us have families, friends and loved ones from out of town with difficult schedules. Many of us have been making plans for graduation well in advance, especially international students. Now that the university will be open on graduation day and finals will still be taking place, our non-senior peers and our favorite professors and members of administration might not even be there. We deserve to have our loved ones see us walk across the stage after our years of hard work, and it absolutely stinks that this might not be possible for some of us now.

However, this does not diminish your accomplishments, Pioneers! Graduating from college at any level is a huge deal and deserves to be celebrated no matter the circumstances. The situation is completely out of our control, and we must adapt, like everything else in life. The only thing we can control is our attitude, so let’s be there for each other and be each other’s biggest cheerleaders. While it is not the same, graduation will still be live-streamed on the university’s YouTube page for people to watch.

We truly wish the best for all of you as you navigate this new graduation date. Try not to stress too much about what you cannot control, as even though this is unfortunate for graduating students and those that will watch your peers or family walk across the stage. Even with the date changing, graduation will still happen and your huge accomplishments will still be celebrated.

Have a great week, Pioneers!
