“Gee, it sure is boring around here.”
How many times have you heard the people around you say something like this? Somehow, there’s an idea that there isn’t enough happening on this campus or even in the rest of Pittsburgh.
Despite the relatively small student body our university has compared to Pitt, there is still plenty to do on our campus. When we put out event calendars in our paper, we do this to get eyes on the events that are happening in our buildings on campus as well as nearby.
Everyone planning these events works tirelessly to make them interesting and fun to the best of their ability. Whether they’re representing a club they’re a part of or if it’s something that is sponsored by the Campus Activity Board (CAB), organizers make these events with the intentions and hopes that people will show up.
And when people don’t show up, what happens? Nobody wins. Simply attending events on campus is what all organizers strive for.
It’s also ironic that many who argue that this campus is boring are the same people who refuse to go to any of the events. How can you know that there’s nothing happening if you don’t even try?
Go somewhere. Leave that dorm – especially the ones that get no sunlight. Just show up at campus events. Be active in the campus community. Don’t be someone who only wants to complain but also isn’t willing to do something about their boredom.
The same is true for those who say that there’s nothing to do in Pittsburgh. Like most things in life, you must find those opportunities.
It is true that there isn’t a McDonald’s on every block in Downtown, and there isn’t a SkyZone nearby. But whose fault is it that the only places you can think to go to are chains?
We are all fortunate enough to go to a university nestled in a city full of interesting places to visit. You just might have to explore to find these places.
OK, so how do you cure that boredom if you don’t know the places to go?
It is as simple as exploring the city. Use that monthly bus pass you get from the university if you opted-in to it. Go to that neighborhood you’ve never heard of and walk around. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some awesome small business that is either brand new or has been a Pittsburgh staple for years that you can now appreciate.
