How do I deal with change? How do I prepare myself for this next step in my education? How do I determine my major when everything interests me? Is following my passion really worth it?
Excellent questions. I know a lot of people struggle with figuring out what their future looks like. One thing I like about college is it truly is the place to figure out who you are and what you want out of your life. In college, you have the opportunity to try so many different things and become a whole new person.
Figuring out what you want from life is hard to do though, because there are so many different factors you have to account for. When I first got here, I had such a defined plan as to what I wanted and what I was gonna do in my life. After being here, I have expanded my interest so much and tried so many new things. I do not fully know what lies in store for my life, but I’m so excited to see what happens and what I can accomplish.
In preparing for your college education there are multiple things I did that I’d advise doing. First, make sure to fully read through the syllabus for all of your classes and take notes for deadlines and excused absences. Second, try to get ahead on your work so you can have some more flexibility with your schedule. Hopefully, you will be able to join a few clubs. Lastly, do not stress about your work. Be sure to give it your best, but do not overwork yourself. If you are sick, please take the time to recover. Put your health first. I can assure you any and all teachers will care more about your health than you getting an assignment turned in on time. Just do not abuse their kindness because they can only give you so much slack, you still are paying for this education so be sure to learn.
I cannot advise you on any specific way to decide what to major in because I want you to experiment and try new things. I have challenged myself repeatedly by putting myself into new environments and clubs at this school. I haven’t liked them all, but I have fallen in love with a few.
Doing what you love in life is important, but I once read that when you do what you love, you have to be OK being poor. I know not every path in life leads to a large amount of money, but I think it’s better to love the life you live rather than live a life without love. So pursue your dream whatever it may be, there is no guarantee it will lead to money, but at least you can enjoy the work you do and love the life you live.
