At this point in the semester conservatory students’ busy schedules are in full swing. Juggling classes, rehearsals and a large homework load is intense and can be exhausting. This lifestyle change can be especially shocking for first-year students.
It is vital to recognize this fatigu e and acknowledge that it could develop into burnout. Experiencing burnout destroys feelings of passion and admiration for your art and leads to an improvement plateau. Depending on an individual’s schedule, this may seem inevitable. But with intentional recovery and healthy boundaries, it can be prevented.
Aside from just burnout, students are at risk to begin experiencing sickness, injuries and serious mental health concerns. During such a demanding point in the semester, confidence is built by maintaining your health so you can show up focused and committed to class.
Establishing beneficial routines may be dependent on what courses you are enrolled in. For instance, it’s vital to prioritize physical rest. Identifying soreness in one’s body and creating stretching routines is an easy solution to staying physical and relieving pain. The athletic trainer’s office on the sixth floor of Lawrence Hall is a great spot for physical therapy or pain management demands. It is important to continue to rest and acknowledge injuries.
For less physically-demanding majors, taking care of your physical well being is still important. Eating a nutritious diet fuels your body and mind to work hard. Getting a full eight hours of sleep each night helps keep you effectively functioning. Even taking daily supplements will help you take care of yourself when feeling ill.
In terms of protecting your mental health, there are many simple practices such as journaling, breathing exercises or listening to music that can help your mind recharge. Even hanging out or talking with close friends can be healing.
With that being said, creating social boundaries is important. It’s okay to not constantly be meeting new people, joining clubs or attending every event.
Listening to the wants and needs of both the body and mind is a great first step for success. It is strongly encouraged for COPA students to take accountability for your overall well-being.
