Believe it or not, Point Park did have fraternities on campus in the past, including one specifically for theater/COPA students. Here is an article detailing Alpha Psi Omega’s revival in its original form, published Oct. 18, 1990.
Theater students arerevitalizing a fraternity at Point Park College by joining and supporting it.
Point Park chartered the fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega, about three years ago. It lost student support and became inactive after its officers graduated.
Students are interested in the fraternity now, Scott Thewes, senior theater major, said after gathering new support for it this semester.
“[Thewes is] reactivating it,” Mary Turner, associate professor and adviser for the fraternity, said.
Thewes .said he would like all students in the fine, applied and performing arts to become involved in the fraternity.
A theater fraternity can bring students together and give them a “ strong voice” in the department, he said.
Freshmen members “have the most to benefit from it,” ‘Thewes sai.
If the fraternity plans to staget heater presentations, freshmen can participate — a plus since freshmen aren’t allowed to perform in Point Park Theatre Company productions. (The Point Park theater department requires freshmen to work on backstage crews until they become sophomores.) Freshmen also can work with more advanced student members.
The fraternity elected the fol lowing officers at a meeting Mon day; Thewes, president; freshman David Flick, vice presdent; and senior Jenny Delowrey, secretary.
Thewes said 26 students attended.
The fraternity plans to raise funds for its activities this semester through theater-related fund raisers.
“We’re going to try to put on a cabaret,” Thewes said. “We’re going to use theater majors as ac tors.”
The fraternity is planning to hold the event at Point Park in December, he said.
“It’s going to be open for the entire student body,’’ he added.
The funds might be used for a banquet for theater students, he said.
Thewes also said a yearbook is published for the national fraternity. Students may have their photos taken and published, Thewes said.
Alpha Psi Omega is a national fraternity for theater students, Thewes said.
Since Point Park chartered the fraternity before, “we’re a member of the chartered system,” he said.
Alpha Psi Omega also is an academic fraternity, Thewes said. Members must be in the fine, applied and performing arts department and must have completed three theater classes.
Thewes said he hopes many students join and “breathe new life” into the fraternity.
