Happy Midterms, Pioneers.
In your time spent cramming and preparing for upcoming exams and projects, many insane events have transpired over the past week which might have slipped your attention.
Among them: A national security directive, NSPM-7, aimed at branding those who hold “anti-Christian” or “anti-American” beliefs as violent radical leftists; President Donald Trump’s effort to send federal troops to both Portland and Chicago, two deep-Blue cities; the government shutdown holding up hundreds of thousands of federal workers’ paychecks; and the ongoing genocide in Palestine, as well as the Congo and Sudan (which are officially considered at-risk of genocide).
Though these are generalizations, it is clear that reading the news is rough right now. Still, one, more subtle headline might have missed the feed of the average reader.
Paramount has pulled the trigger on a $150 million buyout of The Free Press, former New York Times opinion columnist Bari Weiss’s brain child. The deal means that Weiss herself is now the editor-in-chief of CBS News, which is a travesty for all American news media.
The truth of The Free Press is that it’s less brain child and more brain tumor. The Press aims to be a middle-ground for exploring stories not covered by mainstream, legacy publications.
But, in reality, it is one of many hard-right organizations (think BridgeUSA, Turning Point USA) that trick unknowing consumers into believing they are engaging in honest, fair discourse.
A simple example can be found in the publication’s accusation of a “myth of famine” in Gaza, which claimed in May that there really was no starvation in Gaza, and that if anything, Hamas was stealing food aid.
Of course, this is a debunked Israeli government lie, which The Free Press, a publication which says it strives to publish “investigative stories and provocative commentary about the world as it actually is,” ran as truth. Truly hard-hitting journalism.
This is not a coincidence or an accident. It’s just scratching the surface of The Free Press’s campaign of spewing constant, blatant misinformation.
But to be fooled by the Press is one of the most honest mistakes one can make in our day. We are all desperately yearning for some outlet which has no ulterior motive, one which presents the truth as it is and aims to truly hold power to account.
CBS News, with its uplifting of the fraudulent propagandist Weiss, has failed in this task.
The Globe aims to rise above.
This year has proven to be one of tumultuous news for Point Park University, from barred guest speakers to organized crackdowns on crime around campus. It is necessary for the students, staff and faculty at Point Park that The Globe cover all of this and more.
We will not shy away from presenting the truth, scrutinized and verified by editorial staff, as it is. We will also not shy away from encouraging discussion of that truth within our channels.
The paper itself is an outlet which should be used to say how you really feel about something.
We will not, ever at any point, distort or willingly withhold the truth.
We will not be The Free Press, and spin lies as truth. Instead, The Globe will continue to be a fair and honest source on student life at Point Park University.
