“Nightweaver” by R. M. Gray is a new young adult fantasy series that was released on March 4, 2025.
Aster Oberon is a pirate who has lived with her family aboard their ship, the Lightbringer, her entire life. An encounter with an enemy that has mysterious magic changes everything.
Aster and her family are quickly thrown into an entirely new world on land after Will Castor offers them protection and work inside his family’s estate. However, Will is a Nightweaver, which is a magical creature that drinks blood, has unique magical abilities and rules over humans. Each Nightweaver has different magical abilities, but Will is able to manipulate bones, put people to sleep, heal people and more.
Aster grew up being taught never to trust Nightweavers, but she quickly learns trusting Will comes a lot easier to her than she would have liked. Yet, as more answers are uncovered, things turn out to be way more complicated than Aster could have imagined.
This book truly stands out among other fantasy books thanks to its magic system. In most fantasy books, it is common to see creatures such as vampires, werewolves, demons, witches, dragons and many more. However, “Nightweaver” has creatures that haven’t been seen before, like the titular Nightweavers. But, as Aster learns, Nightweavers are not the only creatures that are powerful and magical.
The unique magic of the story made it easy to be immersed in it from the very beginning. It also provides something fresh and completely new compared to other fantasy books that continue to reuse either the same or similar magic systems. A common magic seen recently has been the ability to wield shadows, but that doesn’t make an appearance in Nightweaver.
The plot also makes this book a page-turner because it gives you pieces of the truth that unravel with the story. However, it still manages to keep the suspense and mystery until the end when everything is officially revealed.
Another thing this book does well is create a strong, independent female lead character. Many of Aster’s characteristics aren’t something you typically see in other female leads in fantasy books. This is particularly because Aster is more morally grey than most of the other female leads.
Most female leads in other fantasy books hold themselves to a higher standard, but Aster, for the most part, doesn’t have those same standards. A main part of her character is her reminding herself that she is still a pirate, and a pirate’s hands aren’t exactly clean of blood.
Aster is also able to remain strong and independent while having a softer side to her. Aster doesn’t stray from violence, but a lot of her actions are driven by the love she has for her family and others. Aster is a great example of a character who is both strong and capable of love, which isn’t something that is often seen in female characters who are strong and independent.
“Nightweaver” is a fantastic read for anyone hoping to dive into a world of pirates and unique magic systems.
