The Student Government Association (SGA) approved $115 in emergency funding to the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Union Monday to purchase catered food in preparation for holiday events.
The funding request was approved unanimously.
Additionally, the constitution for a new religious club, “Catholic Crew,” was brought to vote. Sen. Zoe Cybulski was the only senator to raise questions about the club, asking what the purpose of the club is.
“This just sounds like a group of people that hang out, which is pretty much what a club is, I guess,” Cybulski said.
The question was met with laughter from the senate. Parliamentarian Sienna Wraith then said the club will volunteer for the Catholic church, host events and create additional theological space on campus. They recommended approving Catholic Crew’s constitution, which was approved with a vote of 6-0.
SGA President Christian Rangel said elections for SGA will be moved up to give more time for transition times during the change of an administration, along with time to create new amendments, based on the schedule change pushing the end of the fall semester to December 12.
Graphic Design Coordinator Olivia Curti spoke about an SGA engagement poll conducted last week on behalf of the communication committee. She said 21 people responded consistently to the poll. According to the poll, 57% of students surveyed said they heard about SGA through word-of-mouth and 83% of students chose the correct answer on what SGA does.
However, Curti said some respondents thought SGA is meant to be a voice for staff or the university administration.
“In some way, we are the opposite of that,” Curti said.
Additionally, 25% of students surveyed said they are too busy for SGA while 42% of students surveyed said they weren’t interested in SGA, according to Curti.
Graphic designs for SGA suggestion boxes around campus, which have not been utilized since 2017, were also finalized. In a 2017 Globe article, SGA’s predecessor, United Student Government (USG) noted the boxes were usually empty.
