Globe’s Point: Take time for yourself this Thanksgiving break

Happy week 12, Pioneers! It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving break is already here and that finals are quickly approaching. We hope you have been having a great semester. Whether you are staying in the dorms or returning home, we hope that you take some time for yourself this break.

We do recognize that Thanksgiving can be a very complicated time for some. A holiday that is centered around spend- ing time with relatives can cause undue stress. If possible, remember to talk to your family about expectations and boundaries so they remember that you are your own person who deserves to be respected. Your family might expect you to quickly re-adapt to their norms, rules and expectations, which can feel conflicting when you’re used to the life and structure you have made while being here. Putting some boundaries in place, especially with relatives that may have hurt you in the past or are not at all beneficial for your mental health, is difficult but very important. You do not need to listen to your third cousin twice removed’s homophobic or racist comments. Neither do you deserve to be scolded for refusing to hug a family member that you are made uncomfortable by, or walking away from the dining room table. These are not rude things to do, as you have every right to put yourself first and not be in any situation where you feel uncomfortable. No matter what happens or what your family situation is, you deserve to be treated with love and respect, al- ways.

If you are staying on campus, make sure to take advantage of the Pioneer Pantry’s meal boxes. You can register by filling out the form that was sent to our emails, by scanning the QR code around campus or by stopping at the Community Engagement office on the second floor of Thayer. Make sure to stay connected to your friends who may be going home, as well. You do not have to be alone, even if you are physically alone for this break and holiday. People care about you, and they will want to hear from you, even if they are not physically present.

It is okay and necessary to take time away from schoolwork. We do hope that this break gives you a little reset and re- charge for the final few weeks of the semester. You got this, Pioneers!
