Baseball moves to first in KIAC

The University’s baseball team departed its weekend series at Berea College (Ky.) Saturday with a four-game sweep under its belt, adding more pivotal pieces to its campaign for back-to-back National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) World Series appearances. The Pioneers, (15-11 8-4 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletics Conference KIAC) who fell out of the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll last week, regained possession of first place in the KIAC and have now won six straight heading into the heart of conference play after winning 12-2 and 8-3 on Friday and 7-5 and 20-4 on Saturday.Pioneer bats refused to cool off and the team’s season-long tradition of consistent pitching continued, equaling a desirable combination for players. “We know with the strong pitching we have that if we can put up five runs it is probably going to win the game,” said sophomore third baseman Jordan Crowell over the phone Sunday. Crowell went a combined six for eight from the plate in both games with seven RBIs and zero runners left on base.  Four of his seven RBIs on Friday came in the nine-run first inning of game one. Crowell, who hit third in the batting order all four games, may have found head coach Loren Torres a permanent fix for the spot, as several different players have not been able to fill the role.“Theoretically, it’s a more challenging spot in the order as far as pitches you see,” said Crowell, a sport, arts and entertainment management major. “I’ve also been given many opportunities for RBIs.  That’s enabled me to help my team from the offensive standpoint.”It has also taken weight off pitchers’ shoulders.  Right-handed senior Sean Clark, the Pioneers unofficial no. 1 starting pitcher, came out on a tear in game one, as he sat down four in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits. “If we have that passion we had [last] Saturday [at Alice Lloyd College], I don’t think anyone will be able to stop us,” said Clark, a biology major, over the phone Thursday.  “It’s hard sometimes to build momentum, but a sweep this weekend [at Berea] would be something we want to build off of.”Junior right-hander Toby Eigner relieved Clark with two scoreless innings of work, closing out a 12-2 victory. In game two, it was junior right-hander Manny Perdomo who took the hill.  He allowed three runs (two earned) through six innings on five hits, while striking out nine.  Perdomo was succeeded by senior closer Ryan Loutsenhizer, who retired all three batters he faced.Perdomo describes himself as a versatile pitcher.  He holds the ability to pitch to contact or work batters late in the count with his curveball. “We have to keep executing and things will work themselves out if we continue what we’re doing,” said Perdomo, a Business Marketing major, over the phone Friday. The next day, the Point Park pitching staff pieced together two more successful outings that became overshadowed by the team’s performance at the plate.  In game one, starting pitcher Nathon Sphon allowed five earned runs on eight hits.  Sphon was relieved by Josh Brooks in the bottom of the fifth inning and Loutsenhizer succeeded Brooks in the seventh to close the game out.  Both relievers blanked Berea hitters in their three innings of work.Second baseman Tom Birko led Pioneer hitters going two for four at the plate.  The junior drove home four of the Pioneers’ seven runs, including two in the top half of the sixth to help the Pioneers seal the win.In the second of the doubleheader, right fielder Don McDuffee led the Pioneers going three for five with three RBIs and scored four of the squad’s 20 runs. The Pioneers have now played 27 consecutive road games. “Things weren’t going really good for us for the first part of the season and we made a commitment to each other,” Crowell said. “A commitment to everything we have and every moment on the field.”
