Baseball team continues to win

The baseball team kept their winning streak at full force.

Last week, the Pioneers faced off in a series against Ohio Christian University in an away game.

In the first game against Ohio Christian, the Pioneers saved their best for the last inning, scoring four times at the top of the sixth with the help of Andy Chacon’s fourth homer of the season.

Five more runs were scored in the seventh as Oscar Romero added another homer to the game.

Anthony Garofalo took the mound and only gave up a single run. Garofalo stayed on the mound the whole game with only three hits. He struck out two and walked none.

“I felt good up there,” Garofalo said. “Used the fastball a lot. Had a great defensive team behind me and let them handle the ball. It was a team victory. We jumped on them and put some runs late in the game to help seal the victory.”

The high hitting didn’t stop in the first game with three more home runs. Stefan Mrkonja added a homer in the fifth while Jordan Crowell joined with a three-run homer.

Jake Horew followed in the seventh with yet another homer for two more runs.

Transfer from Virginia Intermont College, senior Ben Jarboe pitched for Point Park for five innings, allowing only four hits, two runs and five walks. Robert Rodriguez finished off the game in a non-save situation.

Both games were won by the Pioneers at 9-1 and 14-3.

Point Park then went to another away series against the University of Rio Grande over the weekend.

The Pioneers kept their hitting on point and pitchers Nate Sphon and Nolan Krivijanski helped the cause on the mound.

Sphon worked six innings, only giving up two runs, striking out five and walking one.

Rio Grande came close, pulling the score to 4-3, but Horew moved onto the mound and closed out game one.

Krivijanski took the mound for game two, working for six innings and giving up a single run and striking out five. Horew stepped in again and finished the game.

The Rio Grande series concluded on Monday. The Pioneers went on to split the games with the Red Storm.

Moorer and Chris Hernandez had doubles in the first to help with the early lead of five runs in the beginning of the game.

Rio Grande did not get a run on the board until the fifth inning, which was their only run for the game.

The tables turned in game two with Rio Grande starting off with Mrkonja’s double to deep right-center helped the Pioneers get to more runs in the seventh, but it was enough to win the game.

The Pioneers won the first game at 8-1 and lost the nightcap at 4-3.

“The games went very well. There were times where we could’ve folded under pressure, especially in the first two games, but we rose to the occasion and came through when we needed to,” Moorer said.

The Pioneers are 25-6 overall and have their next game on April 8th in a home game against Milligan College.
