Column As I See ‘Em

One hundred and thirty teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II in women’s basketball. Of those, 32 qualify for the single elimination national tournament to try to become the number one in the nation, and of those 32, Point Park University is one of them.We see movies and documentaries of great sports stories every year.  Depending on the outcome of this run for the Lady Pioneers, this season could qualify as a run for the ages. Not only have they never won a conference title to make the national tournament before, but also this year was widely speculated to be a transition year. Basically any year with a new head coach can be given a free pass. Sure, the fans want the new head coach succeed at first, but it’s common to have a season or two to get it going. Coach Tony Grenek has not only transitioned in a year, but has won and become the best ever at Point Park. Now that the American Mideast Conference championship is under their belt, the Lady Pioneers are going dancing. The big dance, or the national tournament, will be a single elimination tournament of the nation’s best 32 teams in NAIA Division II. Where is this fantastic, once in a lifetime event held? Iowa. Maybe not the most exciting venue ever, but the Lady Pioneers and 31 other teams are more than happy to be traveling to Sioux City. Regardless of how this tournament plays out for the Lady Pioneers, it will obviously be a memorable season. In one year, they have broken the school record for most wins in a season, have won their first AMC championship, qualified for the national tournament and even adopted a student section called “The Herd.” All of this occurred in one single season, which is the head coach’s first at Point Park. The tournament starts on March 7 and hopefully will last until March 13 for Point Park.  In order to win it all, Point Park must win five consecutive games in a span of seven days. So while you and I will most likely be lying on the couch watching ESPN obsess over “Linsanity” and Tim Tebow during spring break, April Austin and crew will be playing in the biggest games of their lives.Hopefully in a few weeks, we’ll be reading tweets from Point Park athletics on updates on which player is cutting down the net. A national championship would not only be huge for the program, but it would be just as huge for the university. Nevertheless, a trip to the national tournament in itself is worthy of our praise. Good luck to the Lady Pioneers in Sioux City!
