Column As I See ‘Em

I’ll never forget the moment when I truly believed that Point Park had legitimate, competitive athletic teams. The men’s basketball team was in a must-win situation to go to the playoffs in 2011. Possibly even more exciting than the game itself, tons of students rode the newly initiated fan vans over to Community College of Allegheny county (CCAC) South. The Pioneers had an actual student section, cheerleaders with uniforms, and school spirit. With time winding down, Point Park guard Jimmy Sherwood hit a clutch shot near the free throw line. The gym went nuts. The opposing team had time for one more possession. After a missed three-pointer and the sound of the buzzer, the student section stormed the court. At that moment, as I filmed the whole thing on my camera, I knew that something had changed. When I came to Point Park, I was excited to come to the city as a journalism student so close to three professional teams and the University of Pittsburgh. As a life-long Pitt fan, I couldn’t wait to buy football season tickets. I never expected to actually become a Point Park Pioneer fan.Four academic years later, I’m leaving the University as a Pioneer fan.  I used to always hear students joke, “Do we even have sports teams?” That question isn’t asked lately after teams such as the baseball, volleyball and women’s basketball qualified for national tournaments. Point Park even has a solid utility player in the Major Leaque Baseball (MLB), Don Kelly with the Detroit Tigers. Plenty of change has occurred over the past few years. A cheerleading club was started and quickly became a cheerleading squad with real uniforms in a two year span. The golf programs started in 2009 are quickly gaining momentum, competing with National Collegitate Athletic Associatin (NCAA) Division II programs. Although not an official team, the rugby team/club was added to the University mix, and now it has dozens of active players and members.Point Park come a long way since my freshman year. Not only did a sketchy parking lot become a construction site and then a beautiful park, but school spirit was born. My only hope is that in 20 or so years when I come back to visit, the school spirit is still here. Thank you for the memories Point Park, it’s been fun.
