Lady Pioneers slay Daemen

Instead of the normal seriousness during Point Park University’s volleyball team’s warm-up, the players that had their worst loss of the season just days before was doing the “Cupid Shuffle,” a popular dance to a song by the same name. The dance was the idea of the team, which sought a different approach to the game against the Daemen College Wildcats to help them overcome the loss to Malone University. The dancing worked as the Pioneers recovered from their worst outing of the year to dominate Daemen and improve the team’s record to 24-9 and 4-4 in the American Mideast Conference (AMC).  Now the Pioneers have to finish the season strong with wins against Cedarville University and Ursuline College for better positioning in the AMC tournament. “I taught them that,” Head Coach Mike Bruno said about the girls’ superior dance moves. He prompted to lighten things up after last Thursday’s loss to Malone University by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-16.                 “After the last couple [of] games we sat down and talked it out,” said sophomore defensive specialist Margaret “MJ” Gillooly.  “We realized we play better when we are more relaxed.”                 The team had a season low of 21 kills and a .020 hitting percentage against Malone.  Point Park had a total of 52 digs and 10 blocks but that was not enough against Malone’s 42 kills.  This is the third time this season when Point Park has been shut, the other two times came in loses against Shawnee State and Wheeling Jesuit Universities.                 “We took Malone as a learning experience,” said sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Oberacker.                The Pioneer’s pre-game dance was justifed when they defeated Daemen College.  Point Park had a total of 45 kills, lead by senior outside hitter Rachel Roddy with 15 kills.  She was followed by senior middle hitter Ashley Zietak and Oberacker with nine kills.  Junior setter Katie Geary had 38 assists to help the offense.  The defense provided 59 digs led by sophomore defensive specialist Amanda Ardinger with 15 digs.  Roddy added 12 digs and Gillooly had another 10.  The team had three blocks on the night with the only solo block coming from junior middle hitter Rachel Stedina.                “We kept constant pressure and had better ball control,” Bruno said.                 Point Park limited Daemen to 23 kills and 26 assists in the match.  The Wildcats had a total of 10 attack errors and four blocking errors, compared to the Pioneers’ eight attack errors and zero blocking errors.  Daemen stayed competitive, however, with 53 digs against Point Park.                “We were more energetic, more positive,” said sophomore defensive specialist and opposite hitter Chelsea Johnson about the win.The Pioneers are currently ranked fourth in their conference with Mount Vernon Nazarene University first, Walsh University second, and Malone University third.  All three teams have beaten Point Park, but it is likely that Point Park will face at least one, if not more, of them in the playoffs.                 This energy will need to be maintained in order for the Pioneers to beat Cedarville University who beat Point Park last year in five games with scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, and 15-11.                 “Cedarville was the biggest heartbreak game last year,” Oberacker said.               Point Park will face Cedarville Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at their home court in the Greentree SportsPlex.  Last year’s match was extremely close with Cedarville having 66 kills and 12.5 blocks and Point Park having 64 kills and 11 blocks. Oberacker, who lead the team with 20 kills last year said.”We have to win,” Oberacker said.Point Park has their last home game Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. against Ursuline College.  This game is senior night for the team and there will be a Fan Van available for students.
