Men’s Soccer kicking it into gear

Point Park University men’s soccer team is off to a strong start this season with 3-1 overall, having beat Fransican University at home, and both Thiel College and University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on the road.  Their only loss was to non-conference opponent Geneva College this weekend, 4-1.The team already has two more victories than they had overall in 2009. I believe the key to victory for this team has been its offense. They have scored a combined 17 goals in only four games.  And yes, this is soccer I am talking about here. There has not been a No. 1 goal scorer up to this point, but the team is doing well distributing the ball and getting players on the board. The leading goal scorer thus far is sophomore forward Francis Tabi with four goals. Sophomore forward Matt Annecchiaro, sophomore mid-fielder Alex Sala and freshman mid-fielder Manuel Schneckenreither are all tied with three goals apiece. Now that’s sharing the rock. The goaltending must have its mention as well.  Goaltender Zeke O’Donnell has only let up seven goals this season; four of them coming from their last game against Geneva. O’Donnell has also made 11 saves this season, keeping the Pioneers in all of their games so far. But hey, that’s a big net back there.  You cannot stop them all.The Pioneers have yet to play a conference opponent, but recording a 3-1 overall record to start is a good beginning for what could be a strong season.  They begin conference play at home on Friday taking on Walsh University’s Cavaliers. The Cavaliers were predicted in the preseason coaching poll as the fifth best team in the American Mideast Conference (AMC).  The Pioneers were not ranked in the AMC’s top six this year, but I can definitely see them improving from last year when they finished with a 1-15-1 overall record. The team’s head coach, Jeroen Walstra, can finally focus exclusively on the men’s team this season. Walstra made his final decision to stick to coaching just the men’s team after previously coaching both the women’s and men’s teams since 2007. It should be a big boost for the Pioneers; knowing that their coach is going to be solely focused on their team instead of sharing his time with the women’s team.  That choice could really show the tem that he is dedicated to them.My Pioneer prospect to watch this season is Alex Sala.  I chose him because he had to sit out all of last season for the Pioneers, since he was ineligible due to not having enough college credits to compete.  I think that he is will have a big chip on his shoulder this season now that he is finally cleared to play.  He already has three goals and I am expecting more. Keep it up Pioneers.Your time is up in the penalty box.
