Men’s soccer learns from losses

The frustration was high and the hands flew in the opening men’s soccer game for the Pioneers against Wheeling Jesuit on Sept. 4.

Yellow cards went out throughout the 90 minutes, and the focus for Point Park was not there with all the halts in the game.

“It was a physical game,” said goalkeeper Zak Borzovoy. “Mentally, we need to be able to deal with teams that aim to try and push us around by standing up to their tackles and getting physical in return. We lacked some of that fire tonight but I think it can serve as a wake-up call in that regard.”

The Pioneers weren’t able to return the fire, losing 1-0 against Wheeling Jesuit.

“It was hard to take the shock of giving away a stupid goal, specifically because we created many more chances to score than they did,” said senior Lucas Silva. “In my opinion, their keeper was the man of the match, but that’s part of the game. Some days the ball finds the net and some days it doesn’t. We just try and learn from our losses and work on the stuff coach points out from the game so we can do better on the next one.”

Wheeling Jesuit’s goalie made ten saves in the game, while Pioneers’ Borzovoy made seven.

Even though Point Park created more goal opportunities on Wheeling Jesuit, it only took one miscalculation to score on the Pioneers.

“The goal was a lapse in focus,” Borzovoy said. “Dom miscalculated his pass back to me and it got picked off. I tried to win the ball but their forward touched it under my legs as I slid. It was a poor pass from Dom, and I should have been quicker to respond and win the ball. Those things happen.”

The Pioneers then hit the road to play against Mt. Vernon Nazarene this past Saturday, Sept. 6.

Senior captain Jonty Loukes won the game for Point Park, with his goal from a free kick.

“It always feels great to get the game winning goal,” Loukes said. “Especially in a hard fought contest like it was on Saturday. But it was nothing more than we deserved after a great performance from the team and we came away with the win, which is what we set out to do.”

The next home game for the Pioneers is Saturday, Sept. 13, against Northwestern Ohio at 2:30 p.m.
