Pioneer baseball stepping up to the plate

The Point Park Pioneer baseball team looks to have finally turned things around after years of finishing under .500 and missing the playoffs. So far this season they look to have changed from the laughing stock of the American Mideast Conference (AMC) to real contenders. The Pioneers have a strong history with over 1,000 all-time wins and 10 NAIA World Series appearances.  Since 2001, they have not had a winning record and the team struggled getting double digit win totals.  Now, under the new regime of head coach Loren Torres, the team has a new attitude and the confidence to become a winning baseball team. This past weekend the Pioneers had their home opener against Penn State University at Beaver at Point Park’s new home field, Green Tree Park.  They demolished Penn State-Beaver 8-1 then 12-1 in the second game.  They were impressive wins because the Pioneers struggled on offense during the last few seasons.  The aspect that impressed me the most was the vibe you felt coming from the team that they wanted to win. That is something the team has missed in recent years.Coach Torres seems to have a tighter grasp on the team than the coaches in the past.  He does not seem to take losing as an option and if they do lose they better still give 110 percent.  You can tell that he takes his job very seriously and understands the type of history the Pioneers have of being a competitive baseball school and he wants to return them to their former glory. The team also has a new winning attitude and it is all about getting to the playoffs.  In the past, it seemed like the players were more worried about their playing time and individual statistics rather than if they won the game or not.  Now everybody on the bench is supporting their teammates on the field and at the plate. I am expecting this team to definitely make some noise come the end of April.  I believe this because the entire team has a lot of speed.  The first two guys in the lineup senior outfielder Brian Grise and senior outfielder Kyle Lucot have great speed and have the ability to steal bases when they can, as evidenced by their five stolen bases between them in the two games against Penn State-Beaver.  They have both contact hitters such as junior infielder Lee Bodnar and the power from players like senior catcher and designated hitter, Dave Angle. The pitchers on this team can throw strikes early and often throughout a game.  Junior right handed pitcher Mike Tullio pitched a complete game against Penn State-Beaver in which he only allowed one run.  Senior right handed pitcher Alcibiades Gonzalez pitched against Penn State-Beaver in the second game where he tallied seven strikeouts in five innings. This team can compete this season and could make this season very special.  The team is 14-4 on the season and they already have one more win than they had all of last season.  History tends to repeat itself so this team could be heading back to their winning ways.Your time is up in the penalty box, you can head back onto the ice.
