Pioneers get back to winning ways

The Pioneers came back with a winning streak this past week starting off in a nonconference game at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.

Point Park started off on a slow lead, falling behind at 2-0 against Penn State-Greater Allegheny (PSU-GA) but fought to a lead of 6-2 after five innings.

Anthony Garofalo took the mound for the Pioneers as a fifth inning relief and took the win for the game.

Garofalo allowed five hits and struck out five as well. Zach Zimmerman came in to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Oscar Romero helped to get back from the 2-0 lead with a RBI double in the third, along with Demetrius Moorer having an RBI triple, his fifth triple in 13 games, and an RBI single by Stefan Mrkonja.

In the end, the Pioneers won with 6-4 in a single nine-inning game.

Point Park then spent March 20 and 21 against Asbury University in back-to-back double-headers.

The Pioneers had 24 hits on the first day, only allowing for four hits in each game.

Nate Sphon threw a four-hit shutout to win the first game, which was the second shutout of his career.

The Pioneers won the first game 6-0.

Nolan Krivijanski took the mound for the second game. The Pioneers were already up 9-0 and had 15 hits. Asbury came back with three runs and four hits. Krivijanksi struck out seven and walked five during his time on the mound.

Moorer had 4-4 hits, which included a home run, a double and three RBIs.

The second game was won with a final score of 9-3.

It was big hitting again for the Pioneers in the second round of games against Asbury. Point Park had a combined 25 runs and 23 hits in both games.

Point Park outscored Asbury 40-8 and had a total of 47 hits in the series.

The series ended with scores of 11-2 and 14-3 in Point Park’s favor. Morkonja had three RBIs and Andy Chacon had two, along with Brandon Savka having an RBI double.

Moorer was 2-4 with two runs. He singled and stole second and then scored on a groundout.

“It felt great,” Moorer said. “We pitched great, hit great and came together as a complete unit. It was good getting the sweep, especially since it was our first conference series, and we just want to build on that going into this week’s games as well as our second conference games.”

The Pioneers’ next game is on March 27 at Alice Lloyd.
