Pioneers to host playoff game

Despite a loss to Walsh, the Point Park University women’s basketball team boosted its National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) ranking to 22nd and came out big winners. Not only did the team rise in its standings but it was senior day and six seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Pioneers. Also with the win on Saturday against Roberts Wesleyan College, Point Park won the right to host an American Mideast Conference playoff game on Feb. 21.”Come playoff time, you want to be at home,” Point Park Head Coach Tony Grenek said in a Sunday night phone interview. “Going to Roberts or places like Houghton, Daemen and Wilberforce are not close trips. If the other teams have to make their trips, that’s better for us.”Another important milestone was reached with a win over Fisher College. The win was the 20th of the season for the Pioneers, a new single season record for the team.”It’s a good goal for us, one of many that we’ve tried to set for ourselves, so we hope to try and continue the run,” April Austin, junior guard, said following the Fisher game. The week started with disappointment as the team saw their 13 game winning streak come to an end against Walsh University, losing 48-46.”I think that was a game we played not to lose instead of to win,” Grenek said. “A lot of good came from that game. We were on a 13 game winning streak, and I think we were feeling indestructible. We didn’t play well, we didn’t shoot well, the referees weren’t calling things our way and I didn’t coach well, but we still only lost by two and had a chance to win at the buzzer.”The matchup against the Roberts Wesleyan Raiders was one that excited the Pioneers. Both teams came into the match with 18 victories and the Raiders had an 8-3 mark in the AMC. The Pioneers won the game by a 57-39 score. The Pioneers received huge contributions in the game from sophomore forward Katresa Savisky who led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 points, junior guard Emily Schartner who scored 11 points and senior center Joncelyn Peterkin who had 10 points and 14 rebounds for a double double.”That’s how it goes,” Savisky said after the win against Roberts Wesleyan. “Some days, some people are hot, and some days other people are hot and today was my day.”Peterkin made a buzzer-beating shot at the end of the first half to give the Pioneers a commanding lead they would not relinquish.”I knew that there was only 10 seconds left, and [Schartner] couldn’t get the shot off, so she kicked it to me, and I just knew to put it up as soon as I got it,” Peterkin said after the win against Roberts Wesleyan. “So that’s what I did and it managed to fall.”Senior Day was filled with emotions as Kristen Beatty, Peterkin, Kristen Veseleny, Austin, Terrica Jones and Emily Anderson were all honored before the game.”Obviously it was bittersweet,” Veseleny said after the Fisher game. “It was the last home game of the regular season and I was trying to take it all in.”The team got off to a fast start as Schartner nailed two three-pointers and the team opened up with a 12-3 run against Fisher College. They never looked back winning 88-50 and coming up three points short of their season high for points.Junior forward Anna-Maria Boshkova saw an increased amount of playing time and made the most of it with a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.”[Grenek] was trying to play the seniors, but I am really happy,” Boshkova said in a Sunday night phone interview. “I just give what I can and do my best whenever he gives me playing time.”The Pioneers remain in first place in the AMC ahead of Daemen College, and the Pioneers played Carlow Tuesday night. Results were not known when The Globe went to print, but if Point Park defeated the Celtics, then they would win the AMC and get the No. 1 seed in the AMC Tournament.            By getting to host the first home playoff game in program history, the Pioneers are excited at what lies ahead and they know that their fans will help pull them through.”We definitely wanted to try and secure a home game,” Schartner said after the Roberts Wesleyan win. “[Home court] definitely plays to our advantage.”Beatty agrees there are benefits to a home game.”I think we’re unstoppable at home, and the more people we have, the more pumped we are for the game,” Beatty said following the win against Fisher.
