Pioneers travel to Penn State-Behrend Invitational

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams traveled to Erie on Saturday, Sept. 16 for the Penn State-Behrend Invitational. The men’s team placed sixth out of 17 teams while the women’s placed fourth in the 5,000 km race.Despite being injured, Dylan Grunn led the men’s team with a time of 26 minutes and 40 seconds and fifth place overall. Zane Kravec came next in 39th place with a time of 28 minutes and 40 seconds. Jon Rohlf and Eric Engel came in 45th and 46th respectively, with times within a second of each other. Rohlf came in with a time of 28 minutes and 57 seconds and Engel was at 28 minutes and 58 seconds.“John Rohlf ran extremely well, this was the first time we have had four runners under 29 minutes,” said head coach Jim Irvin during a phone interview on Saturday. “The guys’ team did great today. Everyone on the team is getting quicker and quicker. We had four or five guys get their personal record today,” senior runner Chris Kennedy, who finished in 58th place with a time of 30 minutes and 22 seconds, said in a phone interview on Saturday. The rest of the men ran the following times: Connor Mulvaney with 29 minutes and 14 seconds, Ian McIntosh with 31 minutes and 40 seconds, Adam Freeman with 33 minutes and 12 seconds, and Dan Kelley with 34 minutes and 31 seconds.  “We are still trying to figure out some things. Dylan and Zane are both really quick. The plan is to get me and Ian McIntosh under 30 minutes,” Kennedy said. The women’s team was led by sophomore runner Hana Jiraskova who finished 12th place overall and had a time of 20 minutes and 55 seconds.“It is difficult to compare this to last week because we ran a 5000 km this week and 6000 km last week. There was definitely improvement in our times per mile though,” said senior runner Lindsay Dill in a phone interview on Sunday. The women’s team is still trying to prevent injuries.“Everyone during the week knows what they can do. We are getting better but we are not there yet,” Dill said.Dill said girls who are hurt are doing more plyometrics, which is a type of active stretch, and riding the bikes instead of running during practice.“We are trying to move up more girls so we can run in a group,” Dill said. The rest of the women ran the following times: Lindsay Dill with 21 minutes, Katie Johnston with 22 minutes and 12 seconds, Marissa Buchheit with 22 minutes and 46 seconds, Maddie Goldcamp with 23 minutes and 14 seconds, Christina Wisniewski with 24 minutes and 20 seconds, Keri Rouse with 25 minutes and 3 seconds, Lindsey Palmer with 25 minutes and 19 seconds, and Becky Lessner with 27 minutes and 42 seconds.Irvin was pleased with both teams’ performances, saying, “both sides ran extremely well.”The next race will be the St. Vincent Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m.
