Softball leaves Kentucky victorious

A second straight weekend in Kentucky yielded wins for the University’s softball team as it took three of the four contests.Following cancellations earlier in the week against Gannon University and Penn State Univeristy New Kensington, the team traveled to Pippa Passes, Kentucky to face Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) foe Alice Lloyd. The outcome of the first game was never in doubt as the Pioneers rolled 23-0. Olivia Sorce hit three homeruns and just missed out on a fourth. Amanda Ardinger and Lauren Fevola also connected for homers. Point Park had a homerun in every inning of the contest, and Sorce came into the game hitting .130.“It was getting frustrating not hitting like I should have been, so it felt good to get some hits and finally feel comfortable at the plate,” said Sorce in a phone interview Sunday.Kate Reese started the game and threw another two-hitter, this one over five innings to get her fourth win of the season. The second game started out tied at three after an inning, but the Pioneers then scored five unanswered runs to take a lead and held on to win 8-5.The team’s offense led the way with 14 hits, and with Destiny James having four of those hits. Sarah Urchek pitched all seven innings getting the first win of her Point Park career.“Even though we knew Alice Lloyd wasn’t very strong, we still didn’t take them lightly,” said head coach Michelle Coultas in a phone interview Saturday. “Their pitching wasn’t very strong the first game but we hit the ball solidly. It was nice to see the girls have fun.”Last Saturday the team faced Berea College and split the contests winning the first 10-4 and dropping the second 4-1.Despite two errors in the first game, the Point Park bats hammered out 16 hits led by Sorce with four and Ashley Morran with three. Gabi Vogt hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning, and Kristen Zelenka pitched six innings and allowed six hits.In the second game, the offense had four hits and four walks but was unable to produce much outside of a Taylor Geary’s solo home run. Hannah Harley lost her third game of the season, allowing all four runs.“We couldn’t get our bats going in game two,” Coultas said. “Berea took advantage of our mistakes. It was a disappointing loss.”The Pioneers faced Penn State Fayette Wednesday in a make-up of a rained out game, before traveling back to Kentucky for weekend doubleheaders with KIAC foes Asbury University and Midway College.
