Steelers do not make it to seventh heaven

The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming home empty handed for the 2010 season but they have nothing to be ashamed of.  They came into this season with no starting quarterback for four games, a defense everyone said was too old, and not many picked them to even make the playoffs.  They had the opportunity to become seven time NFL champions but six will do until next season. The Steelers in the Super Bowl did not look like the team that defeated the Baltimore Ravens or the team that smacked the New York Jets around.  During the Super Bowl, for the first time, I saw Ben Roethlisberger act nervous. When I looked at No. 7 under center on the first drive of the game and incompleted passes to open wide receivers, they showed him walking to the sideline and he wasn’t the Big Ben I’ve seen in previous weeks. Now, I am not going to blame the Steelers loss on Ben, but his turnovers led to big points for the Green Bay Packers. The interception that was taken back for a touchdown was, to me, almost the dagger in the ballgame and was maybe the worst pass I have seen Big Ben throw.Ben is not entirely off the hook for his mistakes, but now it’s time to go to Rashard Mendenhall and his big fumble.  The Steelers’ offense was unstoppable until that point, when Mendenhall picked this time to turn the ball over.  Green Bay took it right down the field again to increase their score. No one can expect to win the Super Bowl when the ball is turned over more than three times. This was not the Steelers team that made it to the Super Bowl, and I am not going to say Green Bay did not deserve to win, but the Steelers gave the game to them. I am not going mourn this loss like many other ‘yinzers’ in Pittsburgh because I know the Steelers have more Lombardi Trophies than any other team. I have had the pleasure of seeing them win twice in my lifetime, while fans of other teams have never witnessed even one championship win. This loss is only going to motivate the team to get back to the championship next season. The frustration was apparent on the faces of Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Ryan Clark, Rashard Mendenhall, Big Ben and the rest of the Steelers’ faces. They knew they did not play to their abilities.Great season, Steelers.  Now it’s time for the Penguins to take over the Pittsburgh spotlight.Your time is up in the penalty box, you can head back onto the ice.
