The Penalty Box

The Pittsburgh Penguins made room on their roster this week to welcome back right wing Arron Asham and center Jordan Staal.  The Penguins moved forward Eric Tangradi and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton yesterday to make room on the roster.                Staal missed the start of the season after getting a post-surgery infection in his right foot. Fans hope Staal fits into the offensive scheme and will open up positions for center Mike Comrie and  left wing Pascal Dupuis on the second line.            Asham comes back after having an impressive preseason and missing time due to a shoulder injury.  I do not see a clear place for him since he is newcomer to the Penguins offensive style. Asham will definitely contribute to General Manager Ray Shero’s wish of forming a tougher team, however                 When the Penguins signed Asham this offseason, I did not understand.  Signing an ex-Philadelphia Flyer, who did nothing but cause problems for us on the ice.  What was the rationale for that? The most goals Asham had in a season was 15, way back when he with the New York Islanders in 2002. Last year, with the Flyers, he only had ten.                  I do not believe Asham is the answer to the Penguins’ problems.  He has never played on a team of such finesse as the Penguins.  He likes to play physically, and throw his body around.  The Penguins do not do that.  They beat you with their offense, not intimidation.                     After saying goodbye to right wing Bill Guerin this offseason, I was hoping the Penguins would spend money to replace him with a younger, right-handed shot.  They signed Asham, who is not what I had in mind. I expected someone who could play on the first line with center Sidney Crosby and left wing Chris Kunitz and who bring a good shot and stick-handling ability. The only stick-handling I have seen from Asham in the past is how quickly it hits the ice along with his gloves.                  The Penguins have a lot of left-handed shots and needed a strong right-handed shot to counteract that.  They have center Mark Letetsu, right wing Tyler Kennedy, center Craig Adams, right wing Eric Godard, and now Arron Asham as right-handed shots.  The only one out of those guys that I might put with Crosby is Letetsu since he has been playing well so far.                  Do I believe that Asham can be an underdog scorer for the Penguins?                  Well, anything is possible, and he can is of those guys that crashes the net for guys like center Evgeni Makin, Crosby and Staal.  He can do the dirty work score goals.  This is his first time on a team such as the Penguins’ caliber in his career and anybody that plays with these talented stars can in the end put up numbers.                   I am not on the Arron  Asham bandwagon yet but I can still see him being a worthwhile asset down the stretch.  Maybe it’s because I still see him in the Flyer’s black and orange, and that bias clouds my judgment. Nevertheless, welcome to Pittsburgh, Asham. Your time is up in the penalty box. Head back to the ice.
